Women's Land Army – History 1939 – 1950 – EzineMark

During the war the women of Britain joined many organisations and the various armed forces, wheras before the war women had not been able to join the sevices. One of the Corps especially created for women was the “Women’s Land Army” where 80,000 women were enrolled to work on Farms all over the UK. The “Women’s Land Army” (WLA) was a civilian organisation created during the First and Second World Wars to work in agriculture replacing men called up to the military. Women who worked for the WLA were commonly known as “Land Girls”.

The Women’s Land Army was often referred to as “The Forgotten Army” and was actually originally formed in 1917 by Roland Prothero who was the then Minister for Agriculture.

The Board of Agriculture organised the Land Army during the Great War, starting activities in 1915. Towards the end of 1917 there were over 250,000 – 260,000 women working as farm labourers. 20,000 in the land army itself.

With 6 million men away to fight in the First World War we in Britain were struggling to find enough workforce. The government wanted women to get more involved in the production of food and do their part to support the war effort. This was the beginning of the Women’s Land Army. Many traditional farmers were against this, so the board of trade sent agricultural organisers to speak with farmers to encourage them to accept women’s work on the farms.

The First World War had seen food supplies dwindle and saw the creation of the Women’s Land Army (WLA).

The WLA was reformed in June 1939 first asking for volunteers and later by conscription with numbers totalling 80,000 by 1944.

The women were called “Land Girls”, as they were affectionately known, replaced the men who had answered the call to war. They wore the same uniform as the “Women Timber Corps” ( Except with a different badge on their Beret’s) and their living conditions were frequently primitive and for girls who had worked in shops, offices, hairdressing salons and restaurants, the work was pretty tiring.

The Women’s Land Army was made up of girls from every walk of life. Posters of smiling girls bathing in glorious sunshine and open fields covered the fact that the WLA often presented raw recruits (many from industrial towns) with gruelling hard work and monotony. The majority of the Land Girls already lived in the countryside but more than a third came from London and the industrial cities of the north of England.

Homesickness was common as many of the girls had never been away from their parents for long periods. This was particularly true of girls that stayed in private billets. The girls that stayed in local hostels often told a different story and were more settled as they were grouped together. However despite all this there was a great sense of friendship amongst the girls.

The WLA lasted until its official disbandment on October 21, 1950. Looking back over the last 70 years it is always surprising how many stories there is still to tell concerning the British Struggle during the second world war and how the war affected every day life and person in the country. My generation who were born in the1950’s and 1960’s owe our parants and grandparants generation for todays freedoms and our grateful thanks.

Even though LED bulbs have extremely low energy consumption and high electric energy to light conversion efficiency, and battery powered LED under cabinet lighting is available and uses no wires at all, it is important for you to consider wired solutions.

Maximising your Chances with Fixed Odds Football Betting

Fixed odds football pools betting is not basically different to the treble chance – or is it? Any form of betting requires that you minimise the odds against you, but with pools betting we have opportunities that, for example, betting on horses does not offer. There are ways to reduce the odds and greatly improve the chances of winning. In some countries, fixed odds betting on a group of matches – for example picking 3 draws – is more popular than the Treble Chance (the British game of forecasting 8 score draws from 49 matches).

Performance History

Generally, most football teams perform in line with their recent results history. This means that in general they will tend to lose against better teams, and win against poorer teams. The quality of the teams is reflected by their position in their league, when the season has stabilised and ‘all other things are equal’.

Now, we could take the basic league positions as the guide to form, but this can change on a day to day basis for reasons unrelated to the team itself – for example by the results of other teams. So, we need to have a slightly more sophisticated system of assessing team performance which takes account of recent results (but how recent?). That is the first part.

Assessing Matches

Then, we need a way of assessing each match in advance to arrive at a likely outcome, ideally being able to put a number to this so that we can compare one match with another and decide which is more likely to be a home win, a draw or an away win. In this way we can arrive at a ranking for each of the 49 matches on a British coupon (which may of course cover Australian football matches during the British summer). That is the second part.

How Many Draws?

Analysis of the 2009-2010 British football season gives us an idea of what the average outcomes are. Over the whole season (40 pools coupons), 45% of matches were home wins, 26% were away wins, and 27% were draws (score and non-score draws combined).

So, with a team performance measure, a way of comparing matches and the above statistics, we can start to ‘home in’ and where the draws might lie (or, for that matter, the homes and aways, if that is your betting preference).

Overall these are just averages – each week will be different and there will be some unexpected results.

We Need a Staking Plan

So, to maximise our chances of winning, whether it is the treble chance or fixed odds, we need a method to spread our stakes.  We do this using plans or perms, which enable us cover many combinations. After all, to forecast 3 draws from 49 matches on a random basis is quite a long shot (the odds are over 18,000 to 1). In a 10 horse race, you have odds of 10/1 of picking the winner. With fixed odds betting, the bookie will have adjusted the payout odds to account (initially) for the likely outcomes, and the odds will drift depending on the stakes being placed. So, whilst in practice we could stake say 10p per combination, that is a big stake for 18,000 lines and we would not cover it with a win on account of the fixed odds (even if the bookie would take the bet), though we would in all probability have many winning lines if there were say 8 draws in the results.

However, if we were to lay a bet of 3 draws from 10 matches (120 separate bets), or 5 aways from 10 (252 separate bets) then we would likely get much better odds. This is because the odds are much longer; however, if we pick our 10 draw forecast carefully, then we can reduce the odds considerably, and still have the possibility of multiple winning lines.

Test consists in running 12 consecutive minutes on flat at a constant speed. You just have to measure the distance you run in these 12 minutes and compare your results with the tables below.

With Cooper’s Test you can also measure your VO2max by using the formula: [distance in meters – 505] / 45.

A good rule of thumb is to measure and track the variations of your endurance fitness over time in order to evaluate your progresses.

Protect Your Horse From Flies – An Old Time Remedy – grease

Being a zen cowgirl, there’s nothing I like better than cooking up homemade remedies and natural horse care products at the kitchen table. One of my favorites is an old-time cowboy remedy people around here (western Colorado) use to keep flies away from their horses.

Are you ready for this? It’s a super-duper rancher secret. Here goes:

Bacon grease.

Yup, I do mean bacon grease, poured straight from the frying pan into an aluminum can after you’re done making breakfast. I accumulate three or four giant soup cans’ worth of bacon grease at a time, especially during the winter, and then use it lavishly in the spring, summer, and fall to keep the horses happy and free of flies. I keep it in the refrigerator or freezer between uses.

How to Use Bacon Grease to Keep Flies Off Horses

Using this grease is simple, if a bit messy. Just take the can of bacon grease out of the fridge and let it warm up a bit, until it’s a little gooey and runny. Then apply it around your horse’s eyes, ears, and face. Slather it down your horse’s midline, top and bottom. That includes your horse’s throat, chest, belly, and the area behind the hind legs. On top, apply it on the midline from the withers to the tail head. If your horse has an itchy tail, you might put a little bit on the tail head as well.

Unlike ordinary fly sprays, which are only good for a few hours, bacon grease will repel flies for up to a week. These include regular flies, giant horse flies, mosquitoes, and even “no-see-ums,” those tiny bugs that you can hardly see but bite nonetheless.

I know the bacon grease works because I have two horses that are super-reactive to fly and mosquito bites. My quarter horse gelding, Walker, will literally buck and run around like a mad-man if a giant horse fly lands on him. When he’s wearing the grease, he rarely reacts this way in pasture. The other sensitive horse, my mustang mare Samantha, develops welts and swellings from fly bites. She also rarely shows signs of these swellings when I apply bacon grease regularly.

Repelling Flies from the Inside Out

Bacon grease works great to keep the flies away from horses, especially if you don’t mind smelling like a short-order cook after you’re done. For horses with sensitive skin that are reactive to fly bites, I’ve also found that certain nutritional supplements help repel flies from the inside out. Two that work well are high-quality mangosteen juice and apple cider vinegar.

I feed my horses an ounce of XanGo mangosteen juice daily, either in their feed or simply by squirting it in their mouths with a syringe. The mare who develops welts from fly bites is much less prone to skin swellings when taking the juice, and the gelding doesn’t seem to attract as many flies. Before I discovered the mangosteen juice, I fed the horses 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar twice a day with their feed. I have also used apple cider vinegar topically, usually mixed with water and Avon’s Skin So Soft, to keep flies away.

Over time I have found that the best combination of home remedies to keep the flies away from my horses is to slather bacon grease on the outside and feed the XanGo mangosteen juice or apple cider vinegar internally. Together they work like a treat to keep my horses happy and relatively free of flies — naturally!
