Horse Racing – Now And Then

The sport of horse racing is popular in many parts of the world. In fact, the sport is so highly regarded that governing bodies have been formed to regulate horse racing events. Many people may not realize that horse racing’s history stretches way beyond the well-known annual Kentucky Derby. Although the origins of modern horse racing date back to the 12th century, horse racing was actually popular long before that.

Horse racing can be traced back to around 4500 BC; it was popular among the nomadic tribesmen of Central Asia. This is not surprising since these wandering clans were the first people to domesticate horses.

In the 12th century, English knights returned from the Crusades with Arabian horses. These horses were revered for their swift speeds. An effort began to import an increasing number of Arabian stallions to breed with English mares. The goal was to produce horses that combined the traits of speed and endurance. This breeding continued over the next 400 years and resulted in the Thoroughbreds we know today.

The fastest horses were paired up and raced against each other, which grew to be a popular pastime among the English nobility. King Charles II held private horse races from 1660–1685, and during Queen Anne’s reign (1702–1714), horse racing emerged as a professional sport. The races began to include several horses, and spectators wagered on the outcomes.

Soon, there were racecourses all over England, which increased the competition to attract better horses. In order to compete, the courses offered increasingly large purses. This resulted in the potential for breeders and horse owners to make a very nice profit. With all the changes and expansions, it was evident that there was a need for a governing authority. The Jockey Club was formed in 1750, and it still exercises complete control over English horse racing to this day.

The Jockey Club set forth standards and rules that helped define the quality of horse racing. It also designated certain races as definitive tests of excellence, such as the Triple Crown. The English Triple Crown consists of the 2,000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the St. Leger Stakes.

Beyond setting the standards and rules for horse races, the Jockey Club also defined regulations related to racehorse breeding. The huge task of tracing the pedigree of every horse racing in England was given to James Weatherby. Although tracing the complete family history of each racing horse was not easy, Weatherby completed his research and published it as the Introduction to the General Stud Book in 1791. Members of the Weatherby family have carefully tended to keeping records of the pedigree of every foal born to those racehorses as the years have gone by. By definition, all true “Thoroughbreds” are descendants from horses listed in the General Stud Book. It’s also interesting to note that the pedigree of every Thoroughbred can be traced back to one of three stallions, referred to as the “foundation sires.”

Meanwhile, the industrial economy was booming during the 1800s in America, which resulted in an increase in various types of gambling, including betting on horse races. The popularity of the sport grew exponentially, and hundreds of tracks were constructed across America. However, at that time there were no governing bodies to enforce rules or standards, which led to the domination of many tracks by criminal elements. This corruption resulted in a growing anti-gambling sentiment throughout the country, and soon many states banned bookmaking. By 1908, the number of racetracks had dropped from hundreds to just 25. That same year, pari-mutuel betting was introduced for the Kentucky Derby, which marked the beginning of a major turnaround for the sport in America. Soon, more tracks opened, and more state legislatures legalized pari-mutuel betting. Today, American horse racing is regulated by state governments.

The newest trend in all types of gambling, including horse racing, is Online Betting. These online games are realistic, and they offer chances to win real money. In addition, you can find great horse racing tips, such as ways to beat the odds and other advice, at quality online resources.

Horse racing may have started as a simple sport, but it has grown into a global phenomenon. The Internet makes learning about horse racing and gambling on races all over the world easier than ever before.

Dont say Neigh to Horse Jewelry

There are many horse lovers who would like nothing better than to receive a piece of unique horse jewelry.  Just as  they enjoy riding, they delight in letting people know about their equine fancy, and well made jewelry allows them to  dress up while simultaneously expressing their love of horses.

Make it Special

There are plenty of pieces of handcrafted artisan jewelry that you can purchase for someone who loves horses.  From  necklaces strung with beautiful pendants of horses running to small stirrup earrings, the selection is extensive.  You  can even select a pearl strand that ends in a silver or gold horseshoe; it might just bring you a bit of luck, or  perhaps you would prefer a charm bracelet decorated with a variety of horse related symbols.

A Unique Expression

Any time you make the effort to have someone make something special, it only adds to the sentimental value of the gift. It is easy to walk into a department store and pick up one of the many identical items and have them wrap it.  Not  much thought is involved in such a process.  However, if you sit down, either online or in person with a jewelry  designer and create a one-of-a-kind item to give, you are investing that item with so much more meaning.

This is exactly what is meant when you hear the expression “it’s the thought that counts.”

Fine or Casual

One of the decisions you need to make when selecting horse jewelry is whether you want a piece of fine jewelry or an  item that can be worn casually.  There is something about horses that inspires a feeling of the outdoors, leather, and  freedom.  A leather bracelet embossed with horse conches or a strand of leather cording offers a wild yet elegant look  that is perfect with jeans and flannel.

Of course, you can also fine pieces of fine jewelry kits that has subtly hidden its horsey nature with elements crafted  into the design; for example, a strand of pearls that bear a stirrup shaped clasp or a silver heart locket that is  imprinted with hoof prints.  Sometimes the best secrets are those kept in the open.

No matter what the motivation behind your interest in horse jewelry, it is good to know that there are many options in  handcrafted artisan jewelry workshops that can meet your needs.  Fine or casual, subtle or bold, the look you choose is  entirely up to you.

Horse Racing Betting Tips – How to Cash a Winning Ticket

The extensive array of wagers available on a horse race today can sometimes be overwhelming to a new fan of the sport. Just a generation ago, bettors were typically limited to win, place and show wagering on each race and perhaps one Daily Double. That certainly isn’t the case to day. Here’s a primer on how to get in on the action through these so-called “exotic” wagers.

There are two main types of exotic bets: intra-race (or “vertical”) wagers and inter-race (or “horizontal”) wagers.

Intra-race wagers include:

Quinella—Pick the first two finishers of a race in any order.

Exacta—Pick the first two finishers of a race in any order.

Trifecta—Pick the first three finishers of a race in any order.

Horizontal wagers include:

Pick Three—Pick the winners of three consecutive races.

Pick Four—Pick the winners of four consecutive races.

Pick Five—Pick the winners of five consecutive races.

Pick Six—Pick the winners of six consecutive races.

There are typically four different betting strategies that can be used with these wagers: a straight bet, box, wheel and part-wheel. We’ll use an example Trifecta and Pick Four bet to illustrate the different strategies.

Here’s how it works: To cash a $1 straight Trifecta bet on 5-7-8, the order of finish would have to be 5 in first place, 7 in second place and 8 in third place.

However, a $1 Trifecta box using 5-7-8 would cash as long as the 5-7-8 finished in the top three in any order. This bet would cost you $6 since you now have each horse in every position. Technically it is six separate bets: 5-7-8, 5-8-7, 7-5-8, 7-8-5, 8-5-7, 8-7-5.

In a part wheel, you are keying a single horse in a specific position. This is a great bet if you determine one horse is the likely winner and any of three or four others figure to battle for second-place and third.

Let’s say you view the 5-horse as the likely winner and the 2, 3, and 4 as the major competitors. You bet a part-wheel using 5 WITH 2,3,4.  This will cost $6 and pays out if the 5 wins and either of your three other horses finish second and third.

In horizontal wagers such as a Pick 4, which requires you to pick the winners in four straight races, employing a part-wheel is usually a good idea. Many bettors will try and find a “single,” in which you find the most likely winner of a race in the sequence and use a group of horses in the other three legs.

For example, you think the 5-horse is the likely winner of Race 5. However, the next three races are wide-open and any one of several runners look like they have the potential to win.

By using a part-wheel, you can gain better coverage. For example, if there are three win candidates in each of the next three legs you can bet a Pick Four by singling the 5-horse in the 5th race WITH 2,3,4  WITH 1,5,7  WITH 5,8,9. This bet would cost you just $9 dollars and would pay handsomely if it wins.

The beauty of horse racing as a gambling entity is, typically unlike sports wagering, you can make a potentially life-changing score with just a small bet by using these strategies for  exotic bets

Horses in Greek Mythology

Horses are quite popular in all forms of mythology. The horse is so well loved by humans that they immortalize them in myths and stories. What is amazing is that stories about horses are not limited to a certain geographic location. Myths and stories about the horse are seen all over the world including ancient Greece, Rome and China. These are some of the horses that are popular in Greek Mythology.

One of the more popular horses in Greek mythology is Pegasus, the winged horse. He is said to be the descendant of the Greek god Poseidon and the Gorgon Medusa. When Medusas head was cut off two offsprings sprouted from her neck: Pegasus and his brother, Chrysaor. Contrary to popular belief which probably stemmed from the Disney movie Hercules, Pegasus did not accompany Hercules in any of his adventures; rather he accompanied the heroes Bellerophon and Perseus.

The epic poem made by the poet Homer also includes another famous horse. This is the Trojan horse sent by the Greeks in order to trick the Trojans into letting them into their impenetrable walls. They left the wooden horse outside the gates of Troy. Troy, thinking it a gift of surrender from the Greeks allows it inside the city. Unbeknownst to them the horse is filled with the Greek soldiers. When night falls, the soldiers exit the horse and burn down the city of Troy.

Centaurs are also a popular part of Greek Mythology and can still be seen in fantasy novels today. Centaurs are half man, half horse. Stories differ when explaining the origins of the Centaur. Some say that the Centaur was the offspring of Ixion and Nephele, a cloud made in the image of Hera. Others claim that they are the offspring of the God Apollo and Stilbe. Most Centaurs are male but there are female centaurs known as Kentaurides. They are barely mentioned in actual Greek mythology but are mentioned in future works such as those created by Ovid. They are seen even in fantasy novels today such as –The Chronicles of Narnia– and the Harry Potter Series.

The Sileni are another, lesser known horse creature from Greek Mythology. They have the body of a man and the ears, tail and sometimes the legs of a horse. The Sileni are followers of Dionysus. They are usually bald aging men with flat noses and thick lips. The Silenus is said to be the wisest and drunkest of all the other Sileni and remained as the teacher of the young god.

Hollywood Park Ends Successful Meet with Increases in Handle and …

Hollywood Park managed to buck the national trend as average daily live race handle was up by 9.5 percent for its just-concluded Autumn meeting. A major reason for the increase in business was an increase in average field size from 7.33 starters per race last year to 7.89.

Total handle for the 26-day meet was $151,319,791, which was a healthy jump from last year’s total of $132,933,380.

“We’re very pleased that wagering on our live product was up over last year,’’ said Hollywood Park president Jack Liebau. “The larger fields definitely contributed to the increase.’’

Larger fields typically translate to more competitive racing and greater wagering opportunities. More than perhaps any other racing jurisdiction, California has struggled in recent years because of a shortage of horses.

However, steps taken recently to help increase purses in the Golden State appears to be working to some extent. Trainers based outside the state have shipped strings of horses to California to take advantage of the increased prize money and more are expected for the upcoming Santa Anita winter-spring meet that opens the day after Christmas.

The lone negative for the Hollywood Park meet was the 5.1 percent decrease in on-track attendance. Daily attendance averaged 9,187 this year compared to 9,680 last year. However, it must be noted last year’s meet featured a Zenyatta appreciation day that drew 17,868 to the track.

In other news from the Hollywood meet, Oakhart Racing and Benjamin Warren had the most wins among owners with four apiece. Arnold Zetcher led in earnings with $504,480, which was largely the result of Hollywood Prevue winner So Brilliant and Horse of the Meet Liason, who won the Real Quiet Stakes and CashCall Futurity.

Joel Rosario was the leading rider at the Autumn meet for the third time in a row. Rosario piloted 37 winners to best Rafael Bejarano by four. Bejarano did top the jockeys’ table in purse earnings with $1,690,868.

Mike Mitchell saddled 18 winners to win his third training title at the Autumn meet. Doug O’Neill was next with 16 followed by Bob Baffert with 15.

With the  Hollywood Park  meet concluded, there will be no racing in California until Santa Anita opens next Monday.

Michael Calderone, Las Vegas, NV – Says Horse Racing Can …

He’s not a gambler, but he does love the sport of horse racing. Not only is horse racing exciting, but Michael Calderone of Las Vegas, NV knows that it is the fans participation, whether betting or owning horses, that makes the sport thrive.

Michael Calderone still believes that horse racing had great potential and could thrive once again like it once did 30 years ago.  Yes, there is a lot of competition now from other sports and gambling opportunities are a dime a dozen, but very few sports or casino games offer a true combination of skill and luck that is required to become a successful participant.

Horse Racing Simulation, through Mike Calderone’s vision, will become the tool that brings together both the novice horse racing fan and the seasoned horse racing veteran, where they can participate together in a robust virtual world that emulates real horse racing.

“Today the number one form of entertainment is gaming.  I don’t mean gambling.  According to Nielsen, approximately 10% of a consumer’s discretionary spend goes toward some sort of gaming application.  That can be console games, social games, even mobile games”, said Michael Calderone.  “What is important is that today’s consumer thrives on not only playing games, but interacting with others in a social environment, and we’re going to take advantage of this opportunity on behalf of horse racing.”

Every major sport has a successful game platform. Horse Racing Simulation, headed by Michael Calderone, plans on making Horse Racing Fantasy the official game of horse racing.  We’re implementing strategic partnerships with powerful organizations tied to horse racing.  We are trying to become the glue that unifies independent operators through a customizable social gaming platform.

Virtual horse racing can be very popular. It has all the right ingredients.  It’s exciting, yet at the same time, it is statistical, similar to what you would find in traditional fantasy sports games.  It is just a matter of finding enough sports enthusiasts and making them aware that an application like this exists and placing them in a social environment where they can interact with not just other gamers, but horse racing enthusiasts as well.  As Calderone’s company emulates the sport of horse racing, they are simultaneously building the next generation of racing fans.  And, the fans are being educated in a way that is entertaining through a game platform, which is exactly the form of entertainment the public is thriving on.

Racing Seats As Carbon Fiber Components

Although seats can almost seem like an afterthought as a race car component, its placement and construction has in fact become a significant part of competition car design. In the early days of racing, race car seats were practically chairs, with no thought to ergonomics or driver stability. Today however, seat design strives to hold the driver in place while being as light as possible. There is a reason competition racing seats look like they do, and this is to support the driver’s shoulders, ribs and hips. In conjunction with a 5- or 6-point harness, these race car components secure the driver in a position that allows him to concentrate on the task at hand.

In this regard, racing seats have become one of the mainstays for using carbon fiber components in racing cars. Carbon fibre seats are optimized for light weight with enough strength to withstand the stresses, and sometimes impacts, of racing. But they also have to be relatively compact to allow practical placement within the space reserved for the driver. In vehicles like rally cars for example, the driver’s and co-driver’ seats are actually mounted differently, with the co-driver’s mounted low and as close to the floor as possible to aid in weight distribution. The driver’s seat, meanwhile, is mounted for optimum reach of the controls, while being mounted relatively high up to give the driver the best field of view. With prototype and sports racing cars, the seats are centered for provide the best weight distribution possible.

Compared to the aluminum and leather padded seats that used to make up one of the race car components of a competition vehicle, carbon fibre seats offer much lighter weight and higher strength. And because they can be molded in more flowing, one-piece shapes, drivers are more comfortable when using these carbon fiber components. In fact, taking a cue from single seat racers, there are now carbon fiber fabricators who offer custom-molded seats shaped for a particular driver. Needless to say, these carbon fiber components are much more expensive, as they require one-off molds for each particular driver. But at the highest levels of the sport where driver distraction should be kept to a minimum, these custom seats can spell the difference between a driver who can put in consistent laps and one who has to adjust his position in the seat from time to time to avoid discomfort. Not all types of high performance driving require these one-off seats. In fact, endurance racers, which have multiple driver changes over a 12- or 24-hour race cannot have these type of seats as one that conforms to a particular driver may be the cause of sores for his teammate.

Seats as race car components have come a long way since the early days of racing. The way carbon fibre seats can be molded nowadays means that driver comfort and safety does not have to take a back seat to optimizing the performance of a race car.

Most Loyal Human Friend in the History – Horse

When you turn the pages of history, you find many instances of horses being an inseparable entity of many civilizations. It is said that History was written on the back of the horses, according to an inscription at The Horse Park in Kentucky. For centuries, horses have developed a special bond with humans who owe this Equus caballus of having served a variety of practical purposes to mankind right from 4000 B.C. An intriguing example of human-animal co-operation is the fascinating partnership between Horse and Rider. As I watched the movie Hidalgo on my Verizon FiOS TV, I was awestruck to see how the horses developed relationships with their masters. Hidalgo is a beautiful painted wild Mustang.

After watching Hidalgo, I desired to watch more movies on horse like Black Beauty, The Derby Stallion, Dark Horse, The Wild Stallion and many other wonderful movies. These remarkable animals share an astonishing trait like the power, and gracefulness, the ability to implicitly trust, and perform complex tasks in tandem with a human partner, working toward a common goal. The rider and horse sync their thinking and know how to communicate, which however takes time for both the horse and rider to learn. A horse could be one of your most loyal, long-term buddies and remember people even after long separation.

A study on horses depict that horses remember people who have trained them or treated them well and these animals understand vocal commands better than expected. As they have an excellent memory, they remember their friendly trainers even after not seeing them for months or years. You can discover the most honorable relationship possible with horses by being compassionate and friendly towards them. Horses display a positive behavior by sniffing and licking as a sign of affiliation with their masters. Horses use their facial expressions to communicate and their moods can be gauged by observing their nostrils, eyes and ears. They can sense the mood of their master and exhibit the same behavior. Horses accept new people more readily, because of a positive memory of humans that they had encountered. A horse is a very sensitive animal and is able to sense the feelings of those nearby particularly hesitation, fear, confidence and anger.

There are more than 350 breeds of ponies and horses that can be found like North American Mustang, Morgan Horse, American Saddlebred, Akhal-Teke from Russia, Black Forest, Arabian, Breton, Egyptian, French Saddlebred, the Welsh Mountain pony, Palomino, The Quarter horse, Australian stock horse, Shetland pony, Gypsy Vanner horse, Falebella of Argentina and many others. Horses are divided into three categories of breeds named Cold bloods, hot bloods and warm bloods. The cold bloods are large gentle horses suitable for slow and heavy work. The Hot bloods are swift, fast and are used for racing. Warm bloods are used for specific riding purposes, equestrian sports and competitions. A cross between a horse and a zebra is known as a zebroid, or zorse. A male horse is known as a stallion, a female horse as a mare and a baby horse is called a foal.

A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a pony is a full grown small horse. Horses eat short, juicy grass, and hay. Foods like barley, corn, oats and bran are good for working horses and they live for about 25 to 30 years. A horse is able to walk, trot, canter and gallop and sleeps both standing up and lying down and spends more energy while lying down. Mostly used for personal pleasure in competitions, horses are loyal, intelligent and have very long-lasting memories and these hoofed creatures are indeed great friends of humans.
