Thoroughbred Horse of the Year Honors Once Again Favor a …

Female race horses are generally not as fast as their male counterparts, especially at the longer distances needed to establish themselves in the handicap division. In recent years we have seen a streak of unusually talented females in Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, and now Havre de Grace.

It is certainly not outside the realm of possibility now that Havre de Grace has beaten older males in taking the Grade 1 Woodward. She still needs to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic to distinguish herself from formidable rivals such as Tizway and even up and coming three year old Stay Thirsty.

If Tizway wins the Jockey Club Gold Cup, it may be hard to deny him Horse of the Year as long as he runs respectably in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Gold Cup is a prestigious and coveted Grade 1 race, and a win will give Tizway his third Grade 1 of the year.

Suppose Havre de Grace wins the Breeders’ Cup Classic by a length over Tizway who gets second. Then Havre de Grace will have two Grade 1 wins over older males, and Tizway will have three and one second place finish in a Grade 1. It will be harder to make the case for her than if Tizway finishes up the track and just has a bad day. Even if that ends up being the case, a strong argument can still be made for Tizway as the frontrunner for Horse of the Year.

Sometimes second place finishes are overlooked but let’s not pretend that seconds don’t count for anything. A second or even third place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic is a noteworthy accomplishment, so Tizway only needs to win the Gold Cup and finish in the money in the Breeders’ Cup to get my vote.

This should be kept in mind when weighing Stay Thirsty’s credentials as well, as we need to take into account his second place finish in the Belmont Stakes earlier this year. If Stay Thirsty takes the Gold Cup he probably only needs a second place finish to be a strong contender for year end honors (provided Tizway doesn’t finish first)

We cannot extol the talents of Havre de Grace without talking about Blind Luck. These two are clearly the two best older females in racing this year. The margin of victory in their previous meeting in the Delaware Handicap was so close that to say that one is better than the other is pure speculation. Blind Luck has finished ahead of her four out of six times they have faced each other, each time the distance between them being very narrow.

It looks as if these two will not renew their rivalry come Breeders’ Cup time as Blind Luck is being targeted toward the Ladies’ Classic and Havre de Grace toward the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Havre de Grace has to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic and convincingly with the winner of the Gold Cup, be it Tizway or Stay Thirsty finishing well behind her, in order to take Horse of the Year.

By becoming a VIP, you can set up your own fantasy races among all the top horses of 2011 such as Tizway, Havre de Grace, and Stay Thirsty. Pit them against each other on grass, in a sprint, over a sloppy track, over Churchill Downs or over the cushion track of Hollywood Park.

Fantasy horse racing is great because you have the ability to virtually match up thousands of champion thoroughbreds from all over the world from the present and the past in great 3-D graphics against one other. You can match up every type of horse from the European champions of the past and present to America’s top thoroughbred horses. And not only can you match these superstars up against one another, you have the ability to set up the race conditions (e.g. distance and track condition) and choose from hundreds of racetracks, both American and European. Fantasy racing is an exciting program for both the sophisticated hard-core horse racing fan and the novice who wants to learn about horse racing history and horse racing itself in general. The passion with riding a horse comes with a great deal of attached baggage that havent lost their substance; accessories like Riding boots for women are any thing but common. Melbourne Cup History to the Greatest Horse Race – Cup – EzineMark

To a great deal of people horse racing is a simple amusement or a best a way to spend an afternoon with friends and family with the thoroughbreds and jockeys providing stimulation for idle chat. However over the world horse racing is a serious business with many billions changing hand in betting rings, online betting agencies and betting exchanges.

When people think of horse racing they look to the fanatical race-goers of Hong Kong, or the civilized Top Hat and Tail world of Ascot. But when it comes to horse racing there is no more prestigious or one that enthralls a nation like the Melbourne Cup. This truly is a race that stops a nation with the state that holds the event, Victoria, having a public holiday and in many other areas of the country it might as well be with Melbourne Cup functions, lunches and events to celebrate the historical race that has been run since 1861 when Archer was walked to the Cup.

The Melbourne Cup Day is fixed on the first Tuesday in November. This horse race is honoured as one of the World’s greatest handicap races. It is always held at Flemington, a Melbourne suburb. There is a small history behind this racecourse where the Cup day is celebrated annually. The first contest was held in 1861 where seventeen horses contested the race. Since it was first run, in 1861, a legend has grown up around ‘The Cup. and in 2010 we celebrate the 150th running of the Cup

The Melbourne Cup is run as a “handicap” where the weight of the jockey and riding gear is adjusted with ballast to a pre-determined figure. The weight varies with the age of the horse and older horses are given more weight compared to the younger ones. The previous results of the horse are also considered to determine the weight.

For many years, I have stumbled through the pages of the history of the Melbourne Cup. I have collected the fables and the folklore, the facts and the fictions, the superstitions and the super stories. In this brief article, I have certainly included some information to start your Melbourne Cup journey and may be to help you make your selection for the race in the upcoming year.

The history of Melbourne cup dates from 1788 when the First Fleet landed at Port Jackson carrying convicts, other cargo, and a stallion, four mares, a colt and a filly. This was no Noah’s ark, but the seasick beasts paved way for the horse race history. In Melbourne settlers set up residence during 1835, and they prepared a racing track to continue with their favourite horseracing. These people missed their favourite horse race due to their long sea voyages. Bullock carts were used as grandstands and the winning post was marked by a coat stand. The currency for placing bets was bottles of rum.

The event became popular and it was time to change the venue. There after, horseracing was held in Fleming Town on the banks of the Maribyrnong River. In March 1840, the beginning of official horse racing history in Melbourne was signaled by a three-day event. Until 1861, minor clubs took charge of arranging for the horseracing. Later, the Victoria Turf Club took over and held the first official Melbourne Cup on Thursday 7th November 1861. This historic race was held between seventeen horses. The first lucky horse to win the first historical race is Archer. The owner and the horse travelled for a long distance to participate in the cup. They had to walk all the way from Nowra in NSW to take part in racing. His efforts were duly rewarded and a handcrafted gold watch with ?170 prize money was awarded to him. This motivated him to win the cup again the following year and became the first of only five other horses to win the Cup multiple times.

The Victoria Turf Club that was responsible for arranging the horse race event merged with the Victoria Jockey Club in 1864 to form the Victoria Racing Club. This club then took charge of proceedings from 1864 to conduct the horse race legally. In 1871, the Victoria Racing Club Act was passed which granted the VRC legal rights to conduct races in the Flemington Racecourse. The sport was gaining popularity over time and it became a wellknown event in Melbourne. During the cup day, many people started travelling from various parts of the country to Flemington Racecourse to take part in the widely popular horse race. More than moneymaking, betting on horses became a traditional part of the day with Calcutta’s and sweeps a major part of the day. In 1865, the Cup day was declared a half-day holiday in Victoria and later in 1877, the whole day was declared as a holiday facilitating thousands of people to gather at the racecourse on the day of the event.

In 1875, Victoria racing club adopting the four-day format held the Cup day on the first Tuesday of November. This has become a standard format for horse race and this is the first step for the carnival that we are enjoying today. Year after year, the Cup day was growing into a major event attracting more and more people. It is worthy to say that the Melbourne cup has created frenzy within the nation as well as across the globe.

Initially, the horses raced for 2 miles, which is roughly about 3218 meters, and this was changed to 3200 meters to adhere to the metric system. A few records of the past were changed to suit the new system so that the world records remain valid even after a change in the distance raced. Kingston Rule recorded the best timing in the 1990-Cup Day, when he clocked 3:16:3. This magnificent record remains unbroken even today. People often confuse him with Kingston Town who was a sparkling champion of the eighties. The trophy that was awarded for the winner underwent many changes until the Melbourne cup was finalized. Though the race has been held since 1861 every year, introduction of handing over trophy to the winner happened only in 1865. The trophy is a miniature horse and rider atop a silver bowl with decorative handles. In 1876, the first gold cup was awarded to the winner. Trophy for the winner was made in Victoria and this continues as a custom even today. In 1888, the trophy again reverted to silver and the design was changed to three silver horses on a silver base. The next year, a funny trophy with a silver tea and coffee service design, was awarded.

Irrespective of the trophy awarded, the winners enjoyed the race and the trophy. It was in 1899, a plaque with an embossing of a silver horse is presented to the winner. From 1915 to 1918, a large rose bowl was awarded to the winner. It was in 1919, the Melbourne Cup was introduced, and after that, the race was called by the name of the cup. From 1922-1960 the value of the trophy changed from ?200 to ?750. In 1973, a cup worth $3000 was presented and the worth of the trophy increased to $9000 in just five years. The value of the trophy kept on increasing from $23,000 in 1984 to $60,000 in 2001. The 2006 trophy was valued at $75,000. In 1861, the prize money was just $1420 and in 2006, this increased to a whooping $5 million. The latest Melbourne cup is made up of 34 pieces of hand-beaten 18-carat gold. This precious trophy is given to the winner who will be on the racecourse for just 3 minutes competing with other horses.

The Best Bets Aren't Usually on the Best Horse – Horse – EzineMark

When you handicap a horse race your first objective is to evaluate the runners and to determine which one is best.  That’s the one you expect to be the favorite.  Sometimes, however, the horse you figure as second best is the one the crowd makes the top choice.  That is understandable, especially when they are closely matched.  Once you’ve found the best horse the next step is the most important one in horse racing handicapping.

I am talking about finding the best bet.  That is the horse that will make you money.  While watching them run is fun and a day at the track is an enjoyable way to spend the day, when push comes to shove, it’s about the money, because that is what keeps you going and without it, it’s back to the salt mines.  Losing one’s bankroll is a one way ticket to Palookaville.

Successful handicappers therefore have to be able to identify the best horse and then the best bet.  Usually, neither of these tasks can be accomplished until just minutes before the race.  You can’t make these calculations based on the past performances alone.  When it comes to handicapping, you can learn a lot from the past performances, but you also should actually look at the horses and do some visual handicapping as well.  A horse that looks mediocre on paper may have improved since the last time out and may show it in the post parade by being the one who is on its toes and who looks like a million.

When it comes to value bets, you should have an idea of each runner’s chances of winning and that will determine what you think is a fair price.  Only have after looking them over in the paddock or post parade can you make your final observations and certify the odds you tentatively placed on them.  At that point you need to check the tote board to see which ones are bet under and over the figures you set for the contenders.

Then, if you can find one at the right price, that is your key horse.  But if you really want to succeed at horse racing handicapping, you need to adopt this wait and see attitude.  Making up your mind too far ahead of time denies the reality that horses are living breathing animals and the crowd is fickle.  You have to check on out on the tote board and one out on the track before risking your money.  Therefore, your best bet is to wait and watch and only make your move when the odds are right.

Could Barbaro Easily Defy Secretariat's Records if He were Older?

I am driven with nostalgia when I try to remember the day the sports papers read Barbaro’s euthanasia news. The world of horse racing was for once stricken with the question, are three year olds too young to be raced?

Barbaro’s euthanasia following the right hind leg fractures during the 2006 Preakness and many further levels of deteriorations in his condition eventually predisposing laminitis (an infection in the legs) caused many racing aficionados to begin to ponder if two and three year olds were the right age to be racing under the saddle.

When Barbaro geared up for the Kentucky Derby in 2006 he was still undefeated leading into an unequivocal victory by 6 ½ lengths to become the sixth undefeated Derby winner since 1946. His sweeping win made him an instant favourite for the Preakness. But the race restarted due to a false start by Barbaro drove him into a catastrophic injury leaving his right hind leg broken in 20 different places and his foot literally dangling loose.

Even after several rounds of surgery, Barbaro’s operated upon legs that had developed an infectious laminitis that seemed to grow into the other legs as well complicating his condition beyond repair. The indomitable horse finally had to be euthanized in January 2007. Many equestrian communities have since argued on the possible impacts of early age racing of thoroughbreds leading them into a more vulnerable teenage phase littered with bowed tendons, chipped bones, fractures, arthritis and back problems.

But how far are thoroughbreds affected and whether or not the racing ethics allow an inhumane treatment of the horses directed solely for selfish benefits through heavy purse racing tournaments?

Years of research in Equestrian care have proven that the fine thoroughbred are infact designed for speed and not durability but there are a series of protocols followed to make sure their participation in an event doesn’t lead them into the deadly bouts of painful injury later. Where on one hand science and technology are trying to bring down the risk figures associated with the horse races conducted on dirt and synthetic tracks, the equivalence of a two year old colt to an 18 year old athlete and a three year old horse to a human athlete in his early twenties may trigger doubt in minds of many a thinkers if the horses at this age are ready for an Olympic equivalent run.

The argument stays open and only time could trigger a wake-up call. Like Barbaro and Eight Belles euthanized soon after their magnificent performances in racing history due to injuries sustained from tremendous racing at a somewhat fragile and developing age may result in an opinion where horse racing could use some reforms. And why not, when there are various online horse racing games to feast your mind on, why not spare the horses the pain and the injury.

Horseracegame.com brings for all horse racing fanatics, a racing platform that is free from any whip and the subsequent pain and performance pressure on real horses. An impressive sprawl of virtual horses that are immortal and the choicest race tracks from around the world, cutting edge 3D graphics, innumerable albums of horse racing pictures and game points that can eventually be encashed for real prizes, this keeps getting better.

Horse Racing Systems – Be Like a Soldier – Disciplined

June 29, 2013 By Leave a Comment

It may sound boring but to turn betting into a profitable pastime a punter needs a high degree of self discipline. By this I mean that you need to adopt a business like approach to your gambling activities. In other articles I have discussed the need to set aside a suitable betting bank and this is the first step towards a business like approach.

Most punters treat gambling as hobby and just a bit of fun. And of course the book makers are quite happy to go along with this. They believe that all they have got to do is put some kind of betting opportunity in front of people and they will rush to take it. The sad thing is that in many cases they are right. That’s why in every
betting office you can bet on numbers, lotteries, ball games, racing from all over the globe with horses nobody has heard of before and even now computer animated, or as they call it, virtual racing.

The second stage after setting up your betting bank is to select a system or systems that you will follow. Of course the problem is which system to select. Some of the sellers of systems make preposterous claims about the profitability of their systems and from what I can see the price charged seems to have very little bearing on their success rate.

I belong to The Betting School private members site who post out a monthly 30 page newsletter which reviews most of the latest systems and as well as finding several useful systems to add to my portfolio I have also been able to avoid some of the time and money wasters.

No matter were you get your system from, (and remember that you can access many free systems from the Internet) you should paper test them for at least one month. This means that you make only imaginary paper wagers for 30 days which gives you any opportunity to test the system and get used to operating it. As you can imagine, this can call for real self discipline, especially if the system is coming up with winners in the first few days.

If you went into your local bookies today and asked the punters present how much they had staked on gambling in the last 3 months and how much they had won how many could tell you? I would be surprised if any of them could.
To be a successful punter you will need to keep records of all your bets so that you can tell exactly how much you are winning or losing.

So by adopting a professional and serious approach to your gambling you will become more disciplined and this will separate you from the majority of punters. If you do this I am sure that you will soon notice an improvement in the returns that you get for your efforts.

Easy Handicapping System With Points for … – horse – EzineMark

June 28, 2013 By Leave a Comment

The best way to handicap a horse race and then make a profit from it is by determining each horse’s chances in the race and then assigning a point value that you can convert to dollars and sense.  For instance, if you find that one runner has 20 points in its favor and another has 10, then if your system is good, that horse with 20 points should be twice as likely as the other one to win, right?  Now the next trick is to look at the odds and see where the value is.

In the above example, if the 20 point horse is at 3-1 and the other one at 2-1, the obvious choice is the 20 pointer.  That is if you want the one who will show the best return, but the best return still doesn’t mean you will make a profit.  You can only make a profit on your bets if the horses you bet on win enough to cover the cost of your bets and then some.

How in the world do you ever get to the point with your horse racing handicapping where you can tell if a horse is a good value?  Here is the system I recommend.  Get a good horse racing system that rates the horse or, if you are comfortable with rating them yourself, assign points for each significant factor.  We’ll stick with the top four horses in the race because the winner is out of them about four out of five times.

Start with Speed, Class, Pace, Connections (jockey-trainer) and rate each one from the best in the race, the top horse, to the worst.  Look at each factor separately and give 4 or 5 points for the best in each category and then one point less for the next best one, etc.  Then add all their points together so each horse in the race gets a score.  Now write the odds that each horse goes off at and then record the finish.

Continue to do this until you’ve looked at enough races to understand how your point system relates to the fair odds a horse should be going to post with.  I can’t easily establish what that is because I don’t know how you rate each of the factors and determine the horse’s position. For instance, for the speed handicapping, you might add the last three speed figures at the distance while another person might just look at the last two races.

Therefore, there may be variations in the methods used by each person.  The important thing isn’t that variation it is only that you can keep records and note the fair odds using your own method.  That is the whole key to making a profit betting on horses.  No matter how you rate them, you have to then know what fair odds may be and the only way to do that is to practice and see for yourself.

Horse Racing – Legacy System Bet & Go Review – System – EzineMark

June 24, 2013 By Leave a Comment

This system has been published for as long as I can recall. I even have a version of the old Sporting Life with an advertisement in for it!! They have been proofing to the newspapers for that length of time!! It has been available for something like 30 years. The solitary difference at this time is that they include the Saver System, which is an adjusted Legacy with a twist, and is designed to produce out more profit. If you purchase this, you will need to run both individually though.

The sales website claims:

2006 : £27,940 or $53,646 Profit!
2005 : £29,010 or $55,700 Profit!
2004 : £33,381 or $64,000 Profit!
2003 : £29,418 or $56,500 Profit!
2002 : £26,554 or $51,000 Profit!

These results are likely accurate but are to £200 stakes, not something your regular gambler will have lying about, especially if you are using something like 3% of your gambling bank per stake. Saying that, to a more realistic stake of £25, still shows £3,500 for 2006. This is TAX FREE remember, and the further your bank builds the bigger your stakes.

The quantity of selections if using both would be between 3-6 a day on average, a sufficient amount to give you a decent daily interest in the horses. I have been told that over the previous few years the greatest losing run on the Saver System is 6, which is very nice. A betting insider who has been following this system for some time (years), is nicely in profit, and over that time shows it does what it says on the tin.

Not wishing to take the word of a couple of blokes, I contacted a pro gambler in the business who I know has been keeping stats of this one, and he had nothing bad to say concerning it, and although it costs a decent bundle to buy, he reckons it is well worth the outlay.

In truth, the information I was passed on was so conclusive, I purchased a copy, and at present use it myself.

And this is the system, remember, which not only has passed the demanding proofing periods mandatory by the UK racing press but additionally has resulted in their unconditional praise for its staggering and unmatched long-term achievement in selecting the winners.

The unique gambling techniques and strategies you become skilled at with this amazing dual system rely solely upon your following a sequence of simple to operate and understand steps. There’s nothing complex or complicated with reference to this. Anyone can do it… And that includes you – irrespective of your age, gender, education, or class.

This amazing dual system works for both Flat and National Hunt racing, Handicap and Non-Handicap. And it’s based upon safe old-fashioned straight win bets. No laying, dutching (backing more than one horse in a race), or any of the rest of that unnecessarily intricate stuff.

And, remember, The Legacy System isn’t about fanciful and not proven system recently cobbled together. The reality is it has a blue-chip pedigree going back over an outstanding 30-years, in which period it has consistently year-in-year-out poured considerable cash amounts into the pockets of its delighted users.

The Legacy System has been available for years, and as long as you administer your betting banks and staking accurately, you ought to profit during the long term.
