The Basic Levels in the Training Pyramid of Dressage – Part 1 – rhythm

Practice makes perfect. That statement is very true for Dressage. Of course, if you only practice by yourself, you may not get any better, but a good coach can help you improve your riding skills. If you have ever had to re-train a horse, you know it. The same counts for re-training a student, or even yourself. Bad habits are habits too, and changing habits has never been easy. Still, it is do-able.

When I started taking dressage lessons, the first lesson was almost all talk. Not much riding. It surprised me, but later on I really appreciated it and was able to go back to what I learned during my rides without my instructor.

Today we are explaining the basis of it all: Rhythm.

Rhythm is the result of a defined beat pattern of the hoof fall. A relaxed horse can step into a natural rhythm in all four of the natural gaits:

1. Walk – this should be and clear regular 4-beat gait.

2. Trot – a clear and regular 2-beat gait.

3. Canter – a clear and regular 3-beat gait.

The walk is 4-beat gait; when either one of the horse’s front legs leaves the ground, it is followed next by an opposite hind leg that reaches forward underneath the belly, creating a diagonal balance point. So the horse doesn’t step on the heels of his own front feet with the rear hooves, he moves each foreleg forward out of the way before a hind hoof on the same side of his body hits the ground.

The trot is a 2-beat gait; in Dressage we need the legs to move in diagonal pairs and hit the ground at the exact same time. When posting we move with the inside hind leg, sitting when it is on the ground and rising when it comes off, to help the horse balance itself.

The canter is a 3-beat gait. On a circle to the right his left hind leg pushes him forward onto his left front/right hind diagonal pair of legs which he’ll use for momentary balance before rolling onto his right front, or leading, leg; thus creating a 3-beat gait. There should be a clear moment of suspension.

To teach a horse rhythm you will ride the majority of your lessons in the trot. The trot is the easiest to control since you only work with a 2-beat rhythm. You also will not have to follow his head and neck, as in the trot, it is relatively still. It is easy to feel, easy to count, and easy to feel if it gets too quick. Once you and your horse have mastered the rhythm in the trot, you will notice that the rhythm in the canter is much easier to maintain.

There is good rhythm and bad rhythm. Good rhythm is when the horse’s canter is a true 3-beat, bad or incorrect rhythm is when it becomes a lazy 4-beat. Rhythm faults in the walk are when it comes close to 2-beat (lateral gait – like gaited horses), and in the trot when it resembles a lame, hopping horse.

Master of Hounds finished fifth in the Derby, beaten only 5-½ lengths, and is getting a lot of buzz coming from railbirds, pundits, and other alleged experts. Many believe he is the dark horse that will come and upset Animal Kingdom in the stretch, but is he really a legitimate threat?
There was little to like in him for the Kentucky Derby, having done reasonably well on the turf over in Europe and on the Tapeta Meydan course in the UAE Derby. Unlike Animal Kingdom, he didn’t dominate his competition on those non-dirt surfaces, though clearly had some talent somewhere. I suppose he ran a tad better than I thought he would in the Kentucky Derby, but maybe only a few lengths better than I expected.
Why is there all this backstretch buzz? A couple well known jockeys I spoke with love Master of Hounds to become the first Irish runner since Go and Go in 1990 to take the third leg of the Triple Crown.
He did draw favorably down at the rail, which should suit his style, which is to drop back. It is not clear just how far he will drop back. In the Kentucky Derby he was 15th of 19 runners for the first few furlongs, but in his prior race, the UAE Derby, he tracked the leaders. In any case, he will get a good ground saving trip here.
He is by Kingmambo who also sired 1999 Belmont winner Lemon Drop Kid, so he has the breeding to go the 1-½ mile distance of the Belmont Stakes. Assistant trainer T.J. Comerford has said that he thinks the 1-½ mile of the Belmont will suit him well.

Thanksgiving Brigade Success – VIP Realty Platinum

Dallas, Texas – VIP Realty Platinum, and DFW Real Estate Broker Harry Ridge, had a super successful Second Annual Thanksgiving Brigade Charity Event even in the midst of the Great Recession!  He and his team of volunteers put together 42 care packages for the unfortunate homeless in Dallas, a 100% increase over last year.  On Thanksgiving eve they provided two meals and care packages full of personal items like socks, gloves, nail clippers, flash lights, lotion, toothbrushes, etc. to desperate, homeless people.  They understand the challenges many people are facing in the Great Recession and wanted to step up and help where they could.  To meet the volunteers and see a slide show presentation go to their website.

Several people and corporate sponsors donated money to purchase food and personal care items.  They came together to collect these items, prepare the meals and put together the care packages.  Soon after they loaded three vehicles will care packages and went into the streets of Dallas to areas where the homeless are known to congregates with their final destination a well know Dallas homeless shelter where they found dozens and dozens of the homeless sleeping on the sidewalks around the shelter, the shelter being full.

Ridge stated “Our experience in the streets of Dallas and the homeless shelter will not soon be forgotten.  The sites and feeling we experienced will leave a lasting impression on all of us”. He goes on to say “I firmly believe they believe that we should give of our time, knowledge, labor and money to those that need it to most.  We should step up when many others step back or step out”.  If the first law or life is giving and it is, we are all need to take care of ourselves we will so we will be able to take care of others.  I am one that hopes that VIP Thanksgiving Brigade will continue to grow in leaps and bounds.

A 20 meter circle at Training Level is the first dressage movement that you’ll do to make your dressage horse more athletic. The goal of riding a round 20 meter circle is to create flexibility.

Flexibility refers to your dressage horse’s ability to bend laterally through his side. Here’s what you should know about lateral bend:

1. The bend through your horse’s side should be equal from poll to tail.

2. Your goal is to help your horse become ambidextrous. In other words, he can bend as easily to the right as he does to the left.

3. As a dressage movement, correctly ridden circles teach baby engagement (the bending of the joints of the hind legs).

4. Circles also develop straightness. By definition, a straight horse is straight on lines and bent along the arc of a circle.

As a “Dressage Movement”, why is it so Important to Ride 20 meter Circles Accurately?

1. Physically, accurate circles help develop lateral flexibility and engagement of the inside hind leg.
2. Mentally, riding accurate circles develops obedience.

Always keep in mind that horses are herd animals. When you ride, you’re part of a two animal herd. Your horse is happy to be a follower if you’re a leader, but he’ll take over if you aren’t the leader.

If you don’t ride accurate circles, you’re letting your horse take over and make decisions. Once your horse learns to take over on a circle, eventually he’ll make more and more decisions on his own. Letting him make his own decisions can escalate into disobedience.

So, you always need to be the leader of the herd. It’s up to you to tell your horse where to go, how to go, and when to go there.

What Do You Need to Know to Ride an Accurate 20 meter Circle at Training Level?

To make an accurate 20 meter circle, do two things:

1. Bend your horse.
2. Ride to specific reference points.

If you’re circling to the left, the bending aids are as follows:

• Weight your inside seat bone (left) to encourage your horse to engage his inside hind leg.
• Place your inside leg (left) on the girth. It acts both as a pole for your horse to bend around and also to maintain the activity of his inside hind leg.
• Put your outside leg (right) behind the girth to help bend your horse’s body around your inside leg and prevent his hindquarters from swinging out. For a 20-meter circle, place your outside leg 1-2 inches behind the girth.
• Ask for flexion to the inside with your left rein. You should just see your horse’s left inside eye and nostril.
• Keep your outside rein (right) steady and supporting. Think of it as a side rein that limits the degree of bend in his neck. It also functions as your turning rein to bring your horse’s shoulders around the curve.

Create a marriage between your inside and outside aids. You need both sets of aids to bend your horse while you turn him along a prescribed line. Your inside aids bend your horse, and your outside aids turn him.

What Are the Reference Points for a 20-meter Circle in a large arena ?

To make an accurate circle in a large arena at Training Level, you need four reference points.

• Start your circle at A or C. This is your first reference point.
• Your second reference point is 4 meters past the corner letter (this is 10 meters from the corner). The biggest mistake riders make when starting a circle, is that they aim for the corner letter. If you do this, you’ll end up with an oval. So aim for 4 meters beyond the corner letter.
• Your third reference point is the spot where you cross the centerline. If you drew a line between M and H (or F and K), that line is 6 meters from the short side. The imaginary line between the next set of letters (R and S or P and V) is an additional 12 meters. When you add 6 meters and 12 meters, you get 18 meters. So in order to make a round 20-meter circle, cross the centerline 2 meters above the line that runs between R and S or P and V.
• Your fourth reference point is on the other long side. Touch the long side 4 meters before the corner letter (10 meters from the corner).

Important: The key to learning how to ride a round 20 meter circle is to look TWO POINTS AHEAD and “connect the dots”.

Remember that all of the dressage movements are not an end in themselves. They’re a means to an end. And “the end” for a 20-meter circle at Training Level is developing flexibility in your dressage horse.

History of Zebra Crossings England 1949 – EzineMark

As Zebra Crossings are a way of life here in England and especially after The Beatles made famous the Zebra Crossing near Abbey Studios, on their Abbey Road Album I thought it would be interesting to write its history. Since the Abbey Road photo was taken, zigzag lines at the kerb and in the centre of the road have been added to all zebra crossings to indicate the no-stopping zones on either side. The band Shriekback’s album, Sacred City contains an entire song, “Beatles Zebra Crossing?”, about the Abbey Road zebra crossing and its status as a tourist attraction.

There is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to zebra crossings in the science-fiction comedy The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy by English author Douglas Adams, in reference to Man using the improbable creature called the Babel Fish as proof to the non-existence of God… the novel says, “Man then goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed at the next zebra crossing.”

A zebra crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing used in many places around the world. Its distinguishing feature is alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface, from which it derives its name. A zebra crossing typically gives extra rights of way to pedestrians.

After isolated experiments, the zebra crossing was first used at 1000 sites in the UK in 1949 in its original form of alternating strips of blue and yellow, and a 1951 measure introduced them into law. In 1971, the Green cross Code was introduced to teach children safer crossing habits, replacing the earlier “kerb drill”.

In the United Kingdom the crossing is marked with Belisha Beacons, flashing amber globes on black and white posts on each side of the road, named after Leslie Hore-Belisha, the Minister of Transport, who introduced them in 1934. The crossings were originally marked by beacons and parallel rows of studs, and the stripes were soon added for visibility.

The crossing is characterised by longitudinal stripes on the road, parallel to the flow of the traffic, alternately a light colour and a dark one. The similarity of these markings to those of a zebra give the crossing’s name. The light colour is usually white and the dark colour may be painted – in which case black is typical – or left unpainted if the road surface itself is dark. The stripes are typically 400 to 600 Millimetres (16 inches to 2 feet) wide.

If there are no additional traffic lights, pedestrians always have right of way on a zebra crossing. In countries such as the United Kingdom, zebra markings are used only where pedestrians have permanent right of way. In other countries they are also used on pedestrian crossings controlled by traffic, and pedestrians have priority only when the lights show green to pedestrians.

Hollywood Park Ends Successful Meet with Increases in Handle and …

Hollywood Park managed to buck the national trend as average daily live race handle was up by 9.5 percent for its just-concluded Autumn meeting. A major reason for the increase in business was an increase in average field size from 7.33 starters per race last year to 7.89.

Total handle for the 26-day meet was $151,319,791, which was a healthy jump from last year’s total of $132,933,380.

“We’re very pleased that wagering on our live product was up over last year,’’ said Hollywood Park president Jack Liebau. “The larger fields definitely contributed to the increase.’’

Larger fields typically translate to more competitive racing and greater wagering opportunities. More than perhaps any other racing jurisdiction, California has struggled in recent years because of a shortage of horses.

However, steps taken recently to help increase purses in the Golden State appears to be working to some extent. Trainers based outside the state have shipped strings of horses to California to take advantage of the increased prize money and more are expected for the upcoming Santa Anita winter-spring meet that opens the day after Christmas.

The lone negative for the Hollywood Park meet was the 5.1 percent decrease in on-track attendance. Daily attendance averaged 9,187 this year compared to 9,680 last year. However, it must be noted last year’s meet featured a Zenyatta appreciation day that drew 17,868 to the track.

In other news from the Hollywood meet, Oakhart Racing and Benjamin Warren had the most wins among owners with four apiece. Arnold Zetcher led in earnings with $504,480, which was largely the result of Hollywood Prevue winner So Brilliant and Horse of the Meet Liason, who won the Real Quiet Stakes and CashCall Futurity.

Joel Rosario was the leading rider at the Autumn meet for the third time in a row. Rosario piloted 37 winners to best Rafael Bejarano by four. Bejarano did top the jockeys’ table in purse earnings with $1,690,868.

Mike Mitchell saddled 18 winners to win his third training title at the Autumn meet. Doug O’Neill was next with 16 followed by Bob Baffert with 15.

With the  Hollywood Park  meet concluded, there will be no racing in California until Santa Anita opens next Monday.

Ma5da Mx5 Racing Championship: Is It The World's Most …

Ma5da MX5 Championship is a single make circuit racing championship based in the United Kingdom. It started in 2008 with 26 registered drivers, competing in one make, one class head to head circuit racing series. The only cars allowed are the Mazda MX-5 1600cc MK1. The cars are almost stock, except for the mandatory safety upgrades. Mazda MX-5 cars are already very popular in the UK and they are the most sold roadsters in history. After a successful first season, the series has been awarded a championship status by the MSA (Motor Sports Association UK).

The 2009 is where the championship had really progressed. The number of registered drivers had doubled before the season had even started. MotorsTV coverage deal has been secured. 20 races over 9 meetings at different UK national circuits. All of these had really added to the value of the championship. The progress and success of the Ma5da Racing championship kept going through the 2009 season. It was named the fastest growing single make racing championship in the UK during 2009.

It was during the 2009 season when the tough competition started to be visible. In that season many drivers from other leading championships started to convert to Ma5da Racing. Average grids for each race were in the 30’s and 40s. These are large numbers for identical cars racing each others on some tight British circuits. TV coverage was great during the whole season. It consisted of one hour program for each meeting at MotorsTV UK, the leading motorsport TV channel in the UK. Large number of racing fans and Mazda MX-5 ehnthusiastics began to follow every single race of the Ma5da Racing championship.

After a successful racing season in 2009, the interest in the championship has really exploded. The 2010 season started with over 100 registered drivers. Many circuits have limits on the number of cars in each race, usually in the 30’s for small tracks and 40s for large tracks. This led to the need to separate the grids into groups. Up to three different race groups have been used throughout the 2010 season. Each race was averaging 30 to 40 cars and the maximum grid was 48 cars.

Ma5da MX5 Racing has become the largest single make championship in the UK. The championship started to attract attention as one of the most competitive championship in the UK. The championship has attracted the best drivers in the UK. Some drivers came from Renault Clip Cup, BTCC, Porsche, and other top British championships.

It is usual in close and equal racing to see more incidents and crashes, this is one aspect of Ma5da Racing that gained a bit of notoriety. The championship had its fair amount of race accidents during 2010. But nothing was serious and no one was harmed. With the addition of the MX5 Cup, based on the newer MK3 Mazda MX-5, Ma5da MX5 Championship is set for even more success in 2011. The championship will kick off in March at Silverstone Circuit.
