The NASA Endurance Fitness Test – oxygen – EzineMark

This test was made to measure your body’s ability to endure an aerobic effort for prolonged periods of time.

An aerobic effort is when your body consumes oxygen in order to create energy. After your body exhausts its maximum capacity to burn oxygen, the process becomes anaerobic: when oxygen is not used and the body creates lactic acid.

Since oxygen consumption increases proportionally to the increase of energy released, we can evaluate the maximum aerobic capacity by measuring the VO2max: your body’s max possible consumption of oxygen in order to produce energy.

A strong aerobic base is essential if you want to remain injury free or run that fast race you are aiming for. Aerobic training involves running at 60-75% of your maximum heart rate. This translates to a pace that is 1½ to 2 minutes per mile slower than 10K race pace. At that rate you can run and keep up a conversation without huffing and puffing.

This test is commonly called Cooper’s Test, from the NASA doctor who invented and utilized this method for military reasons.

Test consists in running 12 consecutive minutes on flat at a constant speed. You just have to measure the distance you run in these 12 minutes and compare your results with the tables below.

With Cooper’s Test you can also measure your VO2max by using the formula: [distance in meters – 505] / 45.

A good rule of thumb is to measure and track the variations of your endurance fitness over time in order to evaluate your progresses.

Please visit The NASA test of endurance fitness on Running Shoes Guru to find the table with the results, split by ages and genders.

Protect Your Horse From Flies – An Old Time Remedy – grease

Being a zen cowgirl, there’s nothing I like better than cooking up homemade remedies and natural horse care products at the kitchen table. One of my favorites is an old-time cowboy remedy people around here (western Colorado) use to keep flies away from their horses.

Are you ready for this? It’s a super-duper rancher secret. Here goes:

Bacon grease.

Yup, I do mean bacon grease, poured straight from the frying pan into an aluminum can after you’re done making breakfast. I accumulate three or four giant soup cans’ worth of bacon grease at a time, especially during the winter, and then use it lavishly in the spring, summer, and fall to keep the horses happy and free of flies. I keep it in the refrigerator or freezer between uses.

How to Use Bacon Grease to Keep Flies Off Horses

Using this grease is simple, if a bit messy. Just take the can of bacon grease out of the fridge and let it warm up a bit, until it’s a little gooey and runny. Then apply it around your horse’s eyes, ears, and face. Slather it down your horse’s midline, top and bottom. That includes your horse’s throat, chest, belly, and the area behind the hind legs. On top, apply it on the midline from the withers to the tail head. If your horse has an itchy tail, you might put a little bit on the tail head as well.

Unlike ordinary fly sprays, which are only good for a few hours, bacon grease will repel flies for up to a week. These include regular flies, giant horse flies, mosquitoes, and even “no-see-ums,” those tiny bugs that you can hardly see but bite nonetheless.

I know the bacon grease works because I have two horses that are super-reactive to fly and mosquito bites. My quarter horse gelding, Walker, will literally buck and run around like a mad-man if a giant horse fly lands on him. When he’s wearing the grease, he rarely reacts this way in pasture. The other sensitive horse, my mustang mare Samantha, develops welts and swellings from fly bites. She also rarely shows signs of these swellings when I apply bacon grease regularly.

Repelling Flies from the Inside Out

Bacon grease works great to keep the flies away from horses, especially if you don’t mind smelling like a short-order cook after you’re done. For horses with sensitive skin that are reactive to fly bites, I’ve also found that certain nutritional supplements help repel flies from the inside out. Two that work well are high-quality mangosteen juice and apple cider vinegar.

I feed my horses an ounce of XanGo mangosteen juice daily, either in their feed or simply by squirting it in their mouths with a syringe. The mare who develops welts from fly bites is much less prone to skin swellings when taking the juice, and the gelding doesn’t seem to attract as many flies. Before I discovered the mangosteen juice, I fed the horses 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar twice a day with their feed. I have also used apple cider vinegar topically, usually mixed with water and Avon’s Skin So Soft, to keep flies away.

Over time I have found that the best combination of home remedies to keep the flies away from my horses is to slather bacon grease on the outside and feed the XanGo mangosteen juice or apple cider vinegar internally. Together they work like a treat to keep my horses happy and relatively free of flies — naturally!

Vintage British Cars of the 1950s – EzineMark

Britain made its name in the world of classic cars in the 1950s with names such as Triumph TR2 sports car launched in1952 and the Sunbeam Alpine a year later. As the decade progressed, another company associated with vintage British cars of the era, Jaguar, rolled out its XK140 and Mk II ranges.

As the British motor industry revived itself following the war restrictions of the 1940s, Sunbeam entered the new decade with the launch of the Alpine. It was a development from the Sunbeam Talbot 80, first rolled out in the late 40s. The Alpine made a name as an excellent rally car, its Mk III 90 model winning the 1955 Monte Carlo rally, but was fazed out that year to be replaced by the Rapier.

Jaguar’s powerful vehicles are readily identified with the classic British cars of the 1950s. Jaguar had launched their XK 120 sports car, with a 3.4 litre engine as early as 1948, but by the early years of the new decade had moved production to the Browns Lane site in Coventry. By 1954 the company had improved on the XK120 with the XK140.

The 1950s were a golden period for Jaguar as they made their name in the world of motor sports. But by the end of the decade they had introduced another car which was to become a classic with the launch of the Mk II saloon.

Joining the ranks of producers of classic British cars of the 1950s is also Ford – albeit its British operation. Models such as the Zodiac, Zephyr and Consul, all British designs, were rolled out during the decade. By 1956 Ford had produced the Mk II versions of these cars.

Other great motoring names of the period are the likes of AC and Austin. AC had produced a 2 litre model by 1950 which came in various body styles. By 1953 they introduced the popular Ace two-seater open topped sports car and by the middle of the decade had added the Aceca Coupe to their range.

During the 1950s Austin were no slouches in producing new models. But one in particular was to become a true British classic. It was none other than the Austin Seven. Launched in1959 it was to become more famously known as the Mini – a model which under its various guises is available to this very day.

Sports activities is among the today’s activities enjoyed by each one, old and young. That doesn’t only promotes sports, what’s more, it cultivates sportsmanship among these young minds as well as hones talents innate in many and develop those that have the potential. Sports will often be played in different venues those being an indoor or outdoor venue. Outdoor locations may mean an outdoors field, the actual track and area oval, an Olympic sized pool and a whole lot. Of these venues, one that’s most common is the outdoor field, noted for sports such as lawn tennis which courts become less perfect for playing when the rain soaks the soil or if the heat gets scourging hot actually leaving you with a brown area rather than green. These types of situations require the benefits and advantages that you can get from synthetic tennis courts.

Areas with organic grass have benefits and disadvantages, stuff that you should know in order to consider and weigh your choices when choosing where to spend your afternoon sport at. Organic lawn fields can be drenched with rain water causing that it is slick; they could also be unequal as hard rainfall falls. Alternatively, synthetic tennis courts are made to give convenience in order to enthusiasts and athletes whenever they need to have which daily dose associated with exercise or anytime practices must be carried out daily. Also a advantage for owners when it comes to the maintenance as these synthetic courts don’t need a lot water to make sure that these people grow the appropriate way, and there’d be no fear from excessive heat.

In choosing artificial or even synthetic courts though, in addition, you need to take into consideration that these aren’t what most players are used to when it comes to playing their sport, which explains why it has to be as near as possible to the way the conventional fields come from the look to the feel after they run around as well as move forward and backwards. Greyhound Handicapping: Play the Most Logical Dog to Win

November 28, 2013 By Leave a Comment

Greyhound handicapping isn’t an exact science, but it does often hinge on logic. For instance, if a dog has had 20 races, placed in ten and run out of the money in the rest of them, would you consider it a good win bet? Well, even though there are some people – born optimists, I guess – who would say “it’s due”, I wouldn’t play it to win and I doubt you would either.

It seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how often the obvious is what happens in dog racing. And when it happens, you’d also be surprised at how many people don’t realize that it’s the most obvious outcome. Take dogs who win in Grade C, move up to Grade B, take a few races to win and then move up to Grade A, where they fail miserably. They look horrible, so when they drop back down to Grade B, most of the bettors take one look at their record and think that they’re a lousy bet.

The reason they’re NOT bad bets is because they’ve done something that proves that they’re able to win in Grade B. Yup, they’ve won in Grade B. Even if they look horrible in their Grade A races, it doesn’t mean that they’re in a downward spiral. It just means that – for whatever reason – they weren’t up to making it in Grade A. At least, not at this time. Maybe they’ll move up again and make it and maybe they won’t. What’s obvious is that they’ve already made it in Grade B, which is where they’re running.

When I see this situation, I take a really close look at the other dogs. Once in a while, you’ll find a race where none of the other dogs has won in Grade B. To me, this is a situation ripe for the plucking and I play the only dog who has won in Grade B. And very often, it wins at good odds. People hate to bet on “losers” and that’s how they see this dog, because it lost in Grade A.

One of my mantras is one that I got from Bill Peterson, the horse racing handicapper. Bill says, “If it happens once, it’ll happen again.” He also says, “Play the horse (or dog) that has already done what it’s being asked to do today.” So, next time you see a dog that has moved up through the ranks to Grade A, but hasn’t won in A, and it’s at good odds, consider it carefully. It just might do again, what it’s already done, and put some cash in your pocket.

Understanding Dominoes Rules – Game – EzineMark

November 27, 2013 By Leave a Comment

It is so much fun to play dominoes. This game has been around for centuries and has been the official past time by generations and generations of kids and kids at heart. Who would not remember spending their afternoons playing dominoes with siblings, cousins, parents or playmates? It is an absolute classic game we are all fond of. In fact, the game of dominoes is already a part of every major culture in the world.

According to history, the dominoes game may have started from China during the 12th century. However, there are also pieces of evidence that point its origin to Egypt and to the Mediterranean. The first appearance of dominoes was in Italy during the 18th century. It became immensely popular all over Europe and the world.

Today, there are numerous versions of this game. And every version has its own little twist as according to the country it has originated from. Each of these dominoes rules depends according to the place of origin.

Learning the Basics of Dominoes Roles

It is not difficult to learn what are dominoes rules if you know its primary components. You need to learn how the pieces of domino work individually and altogether.

Basically, a domino is a small tile of about 2 inch long, 1 inch wide, and 3/8 thick. Each of the tiles in dominoes rules represents two dice. The tile is referred to as the ‘bone’. The most popular set of domino is the double-six.

Dominoes are named after the number of dots on each end. The lower number is usually listed first. For example, a tile with 3 on one end and 6 on the other end is referred to as “3 – 6”. Those tiles with the same number on both ends are called “double”. So if you have a tile with numbers “5 – 5”, it is called “double-five”. The heaviest value for a domino is double-six and the lightest is the double-blank.

In the dominoes rules, tiles with the same number on ends belong to the same “suit”. There are 7 suits with 7 members each.

General Draw Dominoes Rules

There are several versions of domino games: block dominoes, Mexican train dominoes, memory game, and etc. The most common domino game is draw dominoes. The dominoes rules in this game are very easy to play. As a matter of fact, it is the widely played game of dominoes. So, if you hear somebody inviting you to play dominoes, he is probably inviting you to play draw dominoes.

The rules for this game are simple. The game begins by shuffling the domino tiles on the table. Place the tiles face-down and mix them with your hands.

If there are 2 players, each player should get 7 domino tiles. If there are 3 or 4 players, each should select 5 dominoes. Place the tiles in front of you where you can see them. But make sure you keep them well hidden from your opponent. The player with the highest double starts the game.

The next player to the left must place a matching domino next to the first tile. If the first player started with a double-six, you should play the tile with a 6 on it. Otherwise, you have to draw from the boneyard (pile of unselected dominoes) until you get a playable domino. You must pass your turn if you do not have a piece to match your domino. The player who runs out of dominoes first wins the round.

Now that we’ve covered the basics of dominoes rules, have fun and enjoy a wonderful game of dominoes with your family and friends!

The Mischievous History of Tom and Jerry Cartoon Series

November 27, 2013 By Leave a Comment

They are simply brilliant. Their pair rocks the whole world when they appear on the silver screen. Their pair is like coffee and ice-cream. Though they are opposite in nature and always try to catch the other, they can’t live without each other. One of them is a cat while the other is a mouse. I hope that everyone by now has come to understand which cartoon famous pair is being referred to. Yes! It’s the world famous duo of Tom and Jerry. In the ‘Tom and Jerry’ cartoons, Tom is depicted as a mischievous fat cat and Jerry as a smart mouse. The only motto of Tom’s life is to catch jerry and to take revenge, because Jerry keeps on provoking Tom to do so. It is such a popular cartoon series that people from every age group love to watch it. It’s the simplicity of the character of the two that attracts people towards them. In the ‘Tom and Jerry’ cartoon series, the music plays a vital role. It is the background music that adds on to the beauty of this cartoon series.

The history of ‘Tom and Jerry’ cartoon began in London. Lots of people thought that America was the birth place of this famous cartoon. It was a time when printing became famous and everyone wanted to read new things. But printing materials could only serve the people who are educated. So people who were not literate basically, felt a strong need for some alternative medium to meet their requirements. It was in the Georgian Era that the historical journey of Tom and Jerry actually began.

One of the famous journalists of that era was Pierce Egan. By the time he was forty he had built his reputation as the leading reporter of sporting events; fights, horse racing and boxing matches were his specialty; but the hunger for success never ends. This journalist created a title called “Life in London or, the Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, esq, and his elegant friend, Corinthian Tom accompanied by Bob Logic, the Oxonian, in their rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis”. Though it consisted of human characters, it was so popular that other publishers produced pirated versions of it and it was turned into a stage play.  By this point the extremely lengthy title had been stripped down to what we see today “Tom and Jerry or Life in London.”

Only after a century, the idea of two lovable rogues and their adventures crossed the Atlantic and became another huge hit. But the characters of two men were replaced by a cat and a mouse, what we know today as Tom and Jerry. Picking the idea of Pierce Egan, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera Created Tom and Jerry cartoon series. Hanna and Barbera subsequently formed their own studio, creating such legendary shows as The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Top Cat, Scooby Doo and Yogi Bear, to name just a few. Even today, a good portion of the world considers the Tom and Jerry cartoon series to be the best cartoon ever created.

The rich culture of the desert city of Dubai draws on its ancient Arabian heritage, vast modern technology and cosmopolitan luxuries. For centuries a land devoted mainly to herding and trade, Dubai was rocketed into modern times by the discovery of oil just off of its coast in 1966.
