Female race horses are generally not as fast as their male counterparts, especially at the longer distances needed to establish themselves in the handicap division. In recent years we have seen a streak of unusually talented females in Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, and now Havre de Grace.

It is certainly not outside the realm of possibility now that Havre de Grace has beaten older males in taking the Grade 1 Woodward. She still needs to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic to distinguish herself from formidable rivals such as Tizway and even up and coming three year old Stay Thirsty.

If Tizway wins the Jockey Club Gold Cup, it may be hard to deny him Horse of the Year as long as he runs respectably in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Gold Cup is a prestigious and coveted Grade 1 race, and a win will give Tizway his third Grade 1 of the year.

Suppose Havre de Grace wins the Breeders’ Cup Classic by a length over Tizway who gets second. Then Havre de Grace will have two Grade 1 wins over older males, and Tizway will have three and one second place finish in a Grade 1. It will be harder to make the case for her than if Tizway finishes up the track and just has a bad day. Even if that ends up being the case, a strong argument can still be made for Tizway as the frontrunner for Horse of the Year.

Sometimes second place finishes are overlooked but let’s not pretend that seconds don’t count for anything. Later, the Victoria Turf Club took over and held the first official Melbourne Cup on Thursday 7th November 1861. This historic race was held between seventeen horses. The first lucky horse to win the first historical race is Archer. The owner and the horse travelled for a long distance to participate in the cup. They had to walk all the way from Nowra in NSW to take part in racing. His efforts were duly rewarded and a handcrafted gold watch with ?170 prize money was awarded to him. This motivated him to win the cup again the following year and became the first of only five other horses to win the Cup multiple times.

The Victoria Turf Club that was responsible for arranging the horse race event merged with the Victoria Jockey Club in 1864 to form the Victoria Racing Club. This club then took charge of proceedings from 1864 to conduct the horse race legally. In 1871, the Victoria Racing Club Act was passed which granted the VRC legal rights to conduct races in the Flemington Racecourse. The sport was gaining popularity over time and it became a wellknown event in Melbourne. During the cup day, many people started travelling from various parts of the country to Flemington Racecourse to take part in the widely popular horse race. More than moneymaking, betting on horses became a traditional part of the day with Calcutta’s and sweeps a major part of the day. In 1865, the Cup day was declared a half-day holiday in Victoria and later in 1877, the whole day was declared as a holiday facilitating thousands of people to gather at the racecourse on the day of the event.

In 1875, Victoria racing club adopting the four-day format held the Cup day on the first Tuesday of November. This has become a standard format for horse race and this is the first step for the carnival that we are enjoying today. Year after year, the Cup day was growing into a major event attracting more and more people. It is worthy to say that the Melbourne cup has created frenzy within the nation as well as across the globe.

Initially, the horses raced for 2 miles, which is roughly about 3218 meters, and this was changed to 3200 meters to adhere to the metric system. The next year, a funny trophy with a silver tea and coffee service design, was awarded.

Irrespective of the trophy awarded, the winners enjoyed the race and the trophy. It was in 1899, a plaque with an embossing of a silver horse is presented to the winner. From 1915 to 1918, a large rose bowl was awarded to the winner. It was in 1919, the Melbourne Cup was introduced, and after that, the race was called by the name of the cup. From 1922-1960 the value of the trophy changed from ?200 to ?750. In 1973, a cup worth $3000 was presented and the worth of the trophy increased to $9000 in just five years. The value of the trophy kept on increasing from $23,000 in 1984 to $60,000 in 2001. The 2006 trophy was valued at $75,000. In 1861, the prize money was just $1420 and in 2006, this increased to a whooping $5 million. The latest Melbourne cup is made up of 34 pieces of hand-beaten 18-carat gold. This precious trophy is given to the winner who will be on the racecourse for just 3 minutes competing with other horses.

Could Barbaro Easily Defy Secretariat's Records if He were Older?

I am driven with nostalgia when I try to remember the day the sports papers read Barbaro’s euthanasia news. The world of horse racing was for once stricken with the question, are three year olds too young to be raced?

Barbaro’s euthanasia following the right hind leg fractures during the 2006 Preakness and many further levels of deteriorations in his condition eventually predisposing laminitis (an infection in the legs) caused many racing aficionados to begin to ponder if two and three year olds were the right age to be racing under the saddle.

When Barbaro geared up for the Kentucky Derby in 2006 he was still undefeated leading into an unequivocal victory by 6 ½ lengths to become the sixth undefeated Derby winner since 1946. His sweeping win made him an instant favourite for the Preakness. But the race restarted due to a false start by Barbaro drove him into a catastrophic injury leaving his right hind leg broken in 20 different places and his foot literally dangling loose.

Even after several rounds of surgery, Barbaro’s operated upon legs that had developed an infectious laminitis that seemed to grow into the other legs as well complicating his condition beyond repair. The indomitable horse finally had to be euthanized in January 2007. Many equestrian communities have since argued on the possible impacts of early age racing of thoroughbreds leading them into a more vulnerable teenage phase littered with bowed tendons, chipped bones, fractures, arthritis and back problems.

But how far are thoroughbreds affected and whether or not the racing ethics allow an inhumane treatment of the horses directed solely for selfish benefits through heavy purse racing tournaments?

Years of research in Equestrian care have proven that the fine thoroughbred are infact designed for speed and not durability but there are a series of protocols followed to make sure their participation in an event doesn’t lead them into the deadly bouts of painful injury later. Where on one hand science and technology are trying to bring down the risk figures associated with the horse races conducted on dirt and synthetic tracks, the equivalence of a two year old colt to an 18 year old athlete and a three year old horse to a human athlete in his early twenties may trigger doubt in minds of many a thinkers if the horses at this age are ready for an Olympic equivalent run.

The argument stays open and only time could trigger a wake-up call. Like Barbaro and Eight Belles euthanized soon after their magnificent performances in racing history due to injuries sustained from tremendous racing at a somewhat fragile and developing age may result in an opinion where horse racing could use some reforms. It may sound boring but to turn betting into a profitable pastime a punter needs a high degree of self discipline. By this I mean that you need to adopt a business like approach to your gambling activities. In other articles I have discussed the need to set aside a suitable betting bank and this is the first step towards a business like approach.

Most punters treat gambling as hobby and just a bit of fun. And of course the book makers are quite happy to go along with this. They believe that all they have got to do is put some kind of betting opportunity in front of people and they will rush to take it. The sad thing is that in many cases they are right. That’s why in every
betting office you can bet on numbers, lotteries, ball games, racing from all over the globe with horses nobody has heard of before and even now computer animated, or as they call it, virtual racing.

The second stage after setting up your betting bank is to select a system or systems that you will follow. Of course the problem is which system to select. Some of the sellers of systems make preposterous claims about the profitability of their systems and from what I can see the price charged seems to have very little bearing on their success rate.

I belong to The Betting School private members site who post out a monthly 30 page newsletter which reviews most of the latest systems and as well as finding several useful systems to add to my portfolio I have also been able to avoid some of the time and money wasters.

This means that you make only imaginary paper wagers for 30 days which gives you any opportunity to test the system and get used to operating it. As you can imagine, this can call for real self discipline, especially if the system is coming up with winners in the first few days.

If you went into your local bookies today and asked the punters present how much they had staked on gambling in the last 3 months and how much they had won how many could tell you? I would be surprised if any of them could.
To be a successful punter you will need to keep records of all your bets so that you can tell exactly how much you are winning or losing.

So by adopting a professional and serious approach to your gambling you will become more disciplined and this will separate you from the majority of punters. If you do this I am sure that you will soon notice an improvement in the returns that you get for your efforts.
