These thoughts are going to keep you from relaxing. And because horses are attuned to their riders’ moods, your horse is also going to be as tense as you are.

This way, your pony learns better, and soon gets to figuring out just what you want. You need to practice this exercise at numerous parts of your farm and on the trail. Here’s a primer on how to get in on the action through these so-called “exotic” wagers.

There are two main types of exotic bets: intra-race (or “vertical”) wagers and inter-race (or “horizontal”) wagers.

Intra-race wagers include:

Quinella—Pick the first two finishers of a race in any order.

Exacta—Pick the first two finishers of a race in any order.

Trifecta—Pick the first three finishers of a race in any order.

Horizontal wagers include:

Pick Three—Pick the winners of three consecutive races.

Pick Four—Pick the winners of four consecutive races.

Pick Five—Pick the winners of five consecutive races.

Pick Six—Pick the winners of six consecutive races.

There are typically four different betting strategies that can be used with these wagers: a straight bet, box, wheel and part-wheel. We’ll use an example Trifecta and Pick Four bet to illustrate the different strategies.

Here’s how it works: To cash a $1 straight Trifecta bet on 5-7-8, the order of finish would have to be 5 in first place, 7 in second place and 8 in third place.

However, a $1 Trifecta box using 5-7-8 would cash as long as the 5-7-8 finished in the top three in any order. This bet would cost you $6 since you now have each horse in every position. Technically it is six separate bets: 5-7-8, 5-8-7, 7-5-8, 7-8-5, 8-5-7, 8-7-5.

In a part wheel, you are keying a single horse in a specific position. This is a great bet if you determine one horse is the likely winner and any of three or four others figure to battle for second-place and third.

Let’s say you view the 5-horse as the likely winner and the 2, 3, and 4 as the major competitors. You bet a part-wheel using 5 WITH 2,3,4.  This will cost $6 and pays out if the 5 wins and either of your three other horses finish second and third.

In horizontal wagers such as a Pick 4, which requires you to pick the winners in four straight races, employing a part-wheel is usually a good idea. Many bettors will try and find a “single,” in which you find the most likely winner of a race in the sequence and use a group of horses in the other three legs.

For example, you think the 5-horse is the likely winner of Race 5. However, the next three races are wide-open and any one of several runners look like they have the potential to win.

By using a part-wheel, you can gain better coverage. For example, if there are three win candidates in each of the next three legs you can bet a Pick Four by singling the 5-horse in the 5th race WITH 2,3,4  WITH 1,5,7  WITH 5,8,9. This bet would cost you just $9 dollars and would pay handsomely if it wins.

In the world of horses, questions abound. One of the questions that abounds most is this: “How can I keep a pony on the bit?”

I have a reply to this question for you.

You use a particular aid to get your horse on the bit, the same sort of aid utilised for canters or for leg yields. The aid we are talking about here is the half halt.

The half halt is perhaps one of the least understood ideas in the world of horses. Just to do an appraisal of what a half halt is all about, these are some significant points.

1. It helps your pony achieve just about perfect balance;

2. It has a very important role to play; it helps put your animal on the bit, it is also the fulcrum that allows you to effect changes in gait, movement, balance and exercise.

9. The 3 aid sets mentioned above must be applied over 3 seconds

10. The casual viewer would think these 3 aids are given at the same time.

11. But with slo-mo video replay or freeze frame shots, it can be seen that:

a. The 2 calves of the rider are tightly closed to cause a power surge from the rear (at about that point, I’m intentionally keeping the seat out of it, so things can be kept simple).

b. The rider then closes a fist on the outside rein so he can capture the energy from the rear, contain it and recycle it back to the horse’s hind legs.

c. The rider ultimately gives 3 small squeezes. She releases the rein on the inside so the neck is kept straight (this is mandatory because the pony will otherwise turn his neck outwards because of the outside hand fist).

d. The riders lets things go soft after the passage of 3 seconds. She or he goes back to a lighter, maintenance hand and leg pressure, such as he or she had before the half halt.

12. Like any aid, getting a horse on the bit is really very straightforward. Sadly, riders make it complicated by attempting to find exercises so that they can connect the pony (I don’t mean to be contrary, but leg yield type of exercises are beneficial. They are useful in giving newbie riders and horses the connection ‘feel’ but what you really want is to be able to get your pony on the bit using an invisible aid at any time of your choosing, like when you’re showing).

You may talk about casual race goers and weekend warriors, but most of those people are still pretty passionate about going to the races and getting a bet down and they like their winners, too.  One of the problems with betting from afar is that you miss a big part of the experience and let’s face it, a day at the races is an experience and a chance to see a great show as well as to enjoy a live sport that involves both human and animal athletes.

It may be the greatest show on earth and yet, it is forgotten or ignored by many people, even some who like to bet on races.  That’s their loss because if they like to bet on winners, then a trip to the races and a chance to look over the runners.  A trip to the saddling ring or paddock is a chance to get close to the athletes and to look them over closely.

You’d be surprised how a little time spent studying horses can teach you a lot about handicapping and how to pick a winner.  Another good thing about sight handicapping, as it’s called, is that you can spot horses with a problem who may not run true to form.  There are several good videos on the subject and I suggest you watch one or two and then try your luck at spotting a good one.

Here a re a few clues, first of all, excessive sweating is a very bad sign.  If a horse is lathered before the race, pass that one by.  Also, watch the way horses walk and warm up.  There’s an old saying, “Walks like a sailor will be a trailer.”  That means a horse that shifts its weight from side to side while walking is trying to keep weight off a sore leg or hoof.  Once in a while they can warm up and the stiffness or soreness will go away, but many times, they run poorly.

At almost every horse track you’ll find low level claiming races with horses who run against each other every week or so.  One horse will win one week and then another will win the next.  This confuses a lot of the bettors, but here’s a tip.  If you watch those same horses every week, after a while, you’ll spot the one or two who are feeling good on a particular day.  You’ll notice the one on his or her toes, so to speak, the one holding his or her head high and you’ll have yourself a winner.  You won’t be able to tell those things by what you see on the program, but you’ll see it before the race if you’re at the track.

Take some time and go to your local race track and watch the horses. You’ll soon be picking winners on sight and get to know a few horses well enough to know when he or she is ready to run a big race and feeling on top of his or her game.

An example of the steps would be how many bets you will have to make and what you’re return on investment (ROI) might be to reach that milestone.  Obviously this should all be written down and incorporated into your plan.  If this sounds like a lot of work and planning, just think of how hard you worked for that money you are willing to risk on your horse racing bets and how hard you’ll have to work if you don’t plan to succeed and pull it off.

Financial success in business, gambling, and almost any other endeavor in life requires plans, strategies, and systems.  Learn to use them in one part of your life and see the results and you’ll soon be applying them to other areas as well.

Horse Cross Country Three Day Events

Cross Country riding is usually held on the second day of Three Day events; these events include cross country, dressage and show jumping. The fourth (D) segment was the genuine Cross Country, and made for the most difficult segment. Part A was a warm up segment and part C was a recovery segment. Some events made it mandatory for horses that had finished segment C to be comprehensively checked by vets to make sure they were fit enough to resume. Though the segments were timed, it was expected that competitors would give priority to faultlessness of ride over speed. Riders went through segment B and segment D at a gallop. In most modern events, segments A to C have been dropped, and only D is retained. Few modern events still utilize a 4-segment format.

Cross Country courses feature several sorts of jumps, including some almost four feet in height and 12 feet in width. There are direct trains to Newmarket from Kings Cross in London and Cambridge. The roadways A11, A14, M11 and A1 will take to the town. There is a big variety of restaurants here ranging from fine dining to takeouts. The pubs and bars are equally appealing.

Around the town you can find farm shops, vineyards and delicatessen shops. It has always been a market town. However racing started in 1100s. There are also Park and Rice service and shuttle buses straight to the racing grounds.

It is a great place to visit and there are all types of accommodations available. It is a beautiful little town nestled away from the rest of the country by a narrow strip. Some of the places people love to spend time are at the Lowestoft Docks, The Pier and Southwold all in Suffolk, a historic county.

The National Horse Racing Museum is a tourist attraction. Newmarket has the largest horse race training base in UK. The National Stud is renowned for the thoroughbred horses. They also have a football team. Brit Award was from this town. Newmarket sausages are a must try if you are around.
