Even when freed from riders, a pony finds travelling downhill tricky. The problem is compounded when he has a rider astride. It is necessary that you ease his strain as much as you can. Your pony will signal his trouble in terribly obvious ways: he will tend to rush or to throw his head. He may even try some bucking. All of this indicates that he’s having a hard time with his balance.

Again as is the case with all aspects of pony riding, make sure your saddle is fitted completely correct. Shifting saddles cause discomfort, even agony; horses tend to go faster than necessary, even when they are on a slope, to get away from the discomfort. You need to also find out all about riding on slopes before you attempt to do so. Remember, it’s not just the pony, you also , as the rider, can make a major difference.

Here is the common mistake made by riders, particularly the beginners, while going downhill: they get their horses to zigzag down the slope. They have the mistaken impression this is more safe. In reality, though, this isn’t a good idea on slopes without trails or switchbacks. When you get a horse to go diagonally down a slope, your pony will be incapable of finding balance at his hindquarters. He is most balanced when his hindquarters are aligned with the rest of his body; otherwise he is likely to keel over. That would not be a nice thing, would it?

The great temptation is to fiddle around with your position in the saddle when riding down a slope, however it is dangerous to give in to this temptation. You must stay put as you are , balancing your body over your feet and with your weight bearing down on your heels. Continue looking up and forward, not downward.

Another tendency is for riders to lean back in the mistaken impression this’ll help the pony. It does not. The horse desires free hindquarters to move easily, and you will obstruct rather than help by leaning back. It is really better to lean slightly forward.

In general, it is recommended not to interfere in the slightest. Beginner riders feel safer gripping the reins hard when on the way down a slope, but ideally you should let your horse have tons of free rein so his head and neck can move freely. By tightening up on the reins, you are hampering him and putting him off balance, therefore endangering both his well being and yours.

How To Switch A Dressage Whip

I see that a lot of dressage riders face difficulty in smoothly switching their long whips between their hands. When I ask them about their problem, they respond that they feel constricted because of their fear of making their horses uncomfortable and of disrupting contact by twisting the bits in the horses’ mouth.

In the paragraphs that follow, I describe a detailed a procedure to switch the whip from one hand to the other without disrupting contact with the horse’s mouth. It would be best if one was to at first practice this technique with a bridle hung from a hook on the wall or by running a length of rope round a horizontal bar ‘like in a fence’ and using it like your two reins.

Your objective is to practice the process until it becomes deep-dyed, a second nature reaction. It’ll be absolutely necessary for you to keep practicing it in a mechanical left-brained kind of way till it shifts over to the brain’s right side and becomes an automated habit. This is precisely why you have to practice it when you are not on a horse.

1. Take up both whip and reins in one hand. For the sake of this, we’ll assume it is your right hand.

2. Turn the right hand until the thumb faces down and the small finger points up. When your hand is in this position, the whip’s butt end should be pointing at the horse’s withers and the lash end should point straight up.

3. Turn your left hand over and place it so the left thumb rests on top of the right little finger.

4. Keep your left hand in this ‘upside down’ position and curl its fingers around your whip.

5. Release the whip from your right hand and move the left hand so that the whip points straight down. The whip should be gripped in your left hand and the reins in your right.

6. Split up the reins and pass one to the left hand.

You should have succeeded in smooth switching the dressage whip from one hand to the other and have avoided disturbing the bit in the horse’s mouth.

My Experience With Circle Y Flex 2 Elk Ridge Saddle

I decided to buy the Circle Y Flex 2 Elk Ridge saddle for my horse this month. Because a really good friend of mine sang Circle Y’s praises as a company, I decided to purchase this particular saddle. High quality and value are what these well-made saddles are known for.

I prefer to trail ride.  I made the decision to by the Circle Y Flex 2 Elk Ridge saddle after doing some serious investigation into the Circle Y brand.  I was immediately impressed by the decoration of complex patterns of this saddle. I loved the deep brown, walnut color version of the saddle.

The Pros:

Many mass-produced saddles are inferior in quality, but not so with the Circle Y Flex 2 Elk Ridge saddle. . I ride very often and do long trail rides almost every weekend.

Finding the right saddle has proven to be an issue with my horse. I like the freedom of riding trails.  I know right away when I use a saddle whether or not it fits my horse perfectly. I went through quite a lot of saddles in my life.  I also have the tendency to sell my saddles if I don’t like them anymore.

Quality Rides

With the Circle Y Flex 2 Elk Ridge saddle I noticed an immediate improvement in the quality of my rides.  My horse was going for more speed. He also seemed much more relaxed. I will only buy flex tree saddles from now on because I think they are the best ones for my horse.

The Circle Y Flex 2 Elk Ridge saddle fits my horse wonderfully.  The saddle stopped my horse  from doing “odd” things while riding. A Lightweight Saddle

I also love the light weight of this saddle. It’s easy to lift when saddling my horse. Wear and tear is minimal. Of course, you have to take care of your saddle.  But that’s normal. If treated properly, this saddle can last generations.

The Cons:

If you weigh 140 pounds or more, this saddle might not be the best choice for distributing your weight. It’s also a very expensive saddle.  You’ll have to cash out a lot of money for it.  But I think it’s worth it.  To save money, you may want to opt to buy used circle y saddles.

What we did for Charity before Race Nights

Giving to charities is a noble and honourable thing to do. Mother always said that if we are blessed, we should share our blessings with those who are less fortunate. Despite the fact that we were dirt poor and living in the worst part of London in the 60s, mother gave to charities. Some of the charities that she gave to had more money and more food than we did, but it did not matter to my mother because she always felt blessed. She did everything that she could for others. It is too bad that we did not have Race Nights back then.

In poverty-stricken London, there were four ways that the poor could help the poor.

? Donations to specific causes through the church

? Donations of food, clothes, and money to local help groups such as food banks and neighbourhood welcome committees (In our area, if you were moving in it was automatically assumed you were evicted from another neighbourhood and had no place else to go)

? Neighbours taking food to neighbours

? The fourth and final way that you could help needy causes, which were usually families, was to throw them a party. Parties were usually done at their home and everyone that you knew came with food, mostly canned, and pre-baked food, clothes, and furniture.

Let the Church Do the Work

Those who donated through the church were those families that had extra and attended their church on a regular basis. They made sure that the money was beyond their usual tithe of 10% of their net earnings.

Find a Food Pantry

Helping the local charity groups was a very popular way to help a large number of people with numerous single donations. You never knew who you were helping and very often, it turned out to be you at the end of the month, when the well began to run dry.

You Give What You Can

My mother always enjoyed going through her cabinets to see what we could give to those families that we knew. It served the double purpose of giving my mother an excuse to visit with someone she had not seen in a while without it being due to someone dying. Most of the time, it was an elderly couple who were living on a meagre pension.

Let’s Par-Tay

To the last man, everyone we knew loved to throw parties for families that moved into the neighbourhood. The women would get together and dream up things to do to help loosen the purse strings of the husbands, who always banded together in a separate room to drink, tell stories and keep an eye on their wallets. My parents always had the same argument after one of these parties.

No Race Nights Back In the Day

Dad could not understand why he had to give money when we already brought food, furniture, and clothes. Still, the most complicated part of the whole affair was coming up with things to do at the party. If they had Race Nights back then, as they do now, it would not have been a problem because everyone loves to bet on dog and horse races. The DVD would have been a thrilling way to get the attention of the money carrying men, especially since there is a legitimate chance to walk away with more money than you actually had when you came in plus pay for your donation.
