Horse Racing Personalities

With cold weather and heavy snow having gripped much of the UK in December 2010, the King George VI Chase which is normally held on Boxing Day has been delayed until 15th January 2011. There promises to be some horse racing personalities making the headlines in the new year race.

One famous jockey to have won the King George VI Chase and the only jockey to have won the Sports Personality of the Year in 2010, is the 15 time champion jockey Tony McCoy. He won the award ahead of (the 15 times world darts champion) Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor with 41% of the votes. Tony McCoy has a 25% win rate based on his 3,383 wins from 13,664 rides, he admits to dreaming of reaching 4000 wins. Tony McCoy won the Grand National in 2010 on Don’t Push It and the Champion Hurdle on Binocular is a very self disciplined professional (being noted for not drinking or smoking) said of winning the award “I am dazed. To stand in front of the great athletes I was standing in front of is not something you think is ever going to happen in your life”.

Having won the King George VI Chase on the much loved Best Mate in 2002, along with his friend Ruby Walsh who rode Kauto Star in to victory in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 there are plenty of horse racing personalities in the new year race to make it an exciting one. It can be argued that Kauto Star has surpassed the much loved Desert Orchid’s achievement as the most successful horse at Kempton Park. Having won the King George VI Chase four consecutive times, if Kauto Star wins the race this year it will be an incredible five wins in a row! With an exceptional team of trainer Paul Nicholls (who has trained six champions) and jockey Ruby Walsh he was firm favourite for the 2009 race, it is therefore not surprising Kauto Star is favourite again.

Kempton Park is a premiere horse racing venue and a good place for a fun day out, with a winning combination of events and horse racing fixtures that make days at the park exciting. The potential to witness memorable horse racing with fine race horses that have included the amazing Desert Orchid and of course, Kauto Star, Ruby Walsh and Tony McCoy.

5 Tips for Race Event Planning

1. Invest in event banners. You’ll need to let racers know where important spots such as registration and the finish line are located. More importantly, if you’re holding the race to raise awareness for an issue or disease, you’ll want onlookers and passers-by to know what you’re doing. Find a large banner with a simple font so that it is easy to read. If your race or charity has a logo, use it. Have informational pamphlets on hand for anyone who sees your banner and wants to know more about the event. Encourage the bystanders to cheer on your runners.

2. A lot of racers means you’ll need a well-thought-out registration procedure. Divide the registration paperwork alphabetically, and then make sure that each group has a clearly marked place to go. Have a separate line for last-minute racers or participants whose paperwork seems to be lost so that each line moves quickly and smoothly.

3. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll need signs to mark the running course. This is especially important in parks or public areas where there isn’t just one running path. Run or walk the course before the runners arrive and make sure that there is always at least one sign in your line of sight. Put a volunteer with each course sign to encourage runners and point them in the right direction.

4. You’ll need a lot of volunteers. Make sure that there is a special volunteer section marked off, and then have tables with supplies. This is also a good place to store first aid supplies and extra registration equipment. Runners and volunteers should both know where medical help can be found in case anything goes wrong. Have sunscreen on hand as well in case any runners need it. Volunteers should be looking for signs of fatigue in participants so that they can help immediately.

5. Do not forget to supply your runners with water or even snacks. If you don’t want to provide bottled water, bring some coolers that have been filled with clean, cold water and bring small cups. Have a dedicated snack area that is clearly marked, but you should also have volunteers with water at different points on the course. If your event includes snacks, have healthy foods that will help the runners recover. Bananas are excellent because they also reduce cramping. Healthy oatmeal or grain bars, apples or protein bars are also good choices. For charity events many local businesses may be willing to donate post-race snacks to the cause.

It’s no surprise that races are becoming more popular. They encourage fitness, they’re social events and they draw the attention of everyone who sees one. They are a great fundraising tool because runners can find sponsors to pledge money based on their distance or speed. Consider planning a race as your next event, but don’t forget all the details.

Is Havre de Grace as Good a Race Horse as Rachel Alexandra or …

A case can be made that Havre de Grace, who will be one of the favorites for the Breeders’ Cup Classic is as good as Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta. It is true that until she does a little more, it is a rather weak case, but she is still close to them in ability at worst, and equal to them at best.

One of the main criteria that must be used that great mares such as Azeri or Sightseek were never able to meet is to beat older males. Both Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra accomplished this feat. Rachel did it in winning the Grade 1 Woodward, and Zenyatta did it in winning the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic in dramatic fashion.

Rachel Alexandra also proved that she was able to beat the best of the three year old males as well. She defeated 2009 Derby winner Mine That Bird in the Preakness, and then went on to defeat Travers winner Summer Bird in the Grade 1 Haskell.

And Zenyatta proved her win in the Breeders’ Cup was no fluke as she rallied boldly in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic falling just a head short of winner Blame.

Now Havre de Grace has taken the Grade 1 Woodward against older males, defeating Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and Grade 2 Suburban winner Flat Out, who is a solid older male horse. Her win in that race saw her achieve a career high Beyer Speed Figure of 111, a figure that Zenyatta was able to top only once, when she got a 112 for her Classic win. Havre de Grace seems to run Beyer numbers consistently from 105 to 110, which is better than many of the numbers Zenyatta received for her 19 wins. In fact, Zenyatta registered Beyers of over 105 only three times in her 19 wins.

Havre de Grace in fact has registered Beyer Speed Figures of 105 or better six times. Of course Havre de Grace has picked up three losses to a talented female by the name of Blind Luck, and Havre de Grace would be an undefeated six for six this year if not for a nose loss to Blind Luck in the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap back in July.

She has seven wins from thirteen starts and has beaten older males in a Grade 1 race once. It is worth mentioning her in the same breath as Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, but most would agree she hasn’t accomplished quite as much yet. If she can pull off a win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, she will win Horse of the Year and will well deserve mention as one of the great mares of her generation.

These are three very talented race horses. Why don’t you race them virtually against each other in the best online racing gameavailable. Visit HorseRaceGame.com and participate as a breeder, owner, jockey or trainer in the Internet’s number one horse racing game.

Bob Baffert and his brigade of Outstanding Thoroughbreds in World …

Thirty Slews who drew his pedigree from grand sire Seattle Slew chased down victory in the Breeder’s Cup Sprint in 1992; his win paid $39.40, a win that is recalled merely as a fluke except for the man who trained him.

Silver Charm in 1997 captured the first two legs of the Triple Crown in a hopelessly thrilling performance and headed for the third leg at Belmont when he lost it to Touch Gold and finished second. The 63rd ranking horse on Blood Horse Top 100 American race horses list was also the American Champion Three Year Old for the year 1997.

1998, Real Quiet quite much accomplished a similar feat as silver Charm the previous year, entering the Kentucky Derby with a Beyer Speed Figure rating highest acquired by any two year old. He also won the Preakness with a substantial lead. However another failure followed this year again with Real Quiet losing the Belmont Stakes to Victory Gallop by merely a nose.

History repeated itself when War Emblem won the Kentucky Derby in 2002. His next win followed with one in the Preakness but lost the final leg to Sarava. As luck would have it, War Emblem had stumbled in the beginning of the race but he had managed to quickly make up to leading the field until in the final stretch he ran out of gas just a few furlongs before the wire.

Every single defeat came as a lethal blow to all the anticipations of a Triple Crown victory for this man but the racing tracks continued to witness consistent and determined contention from him year after year.

His Kentucky Derby-Preakness wins saw a change of plans when in 2001Point Given won the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. However the very next year he was back to square one.

It was only in 2010 that eventually his Triple Crown leg winning came back to him with a Preakness victory by Lookin at Lucy.

This was Bob Baffert and his endless array of wins in a major races throughout his career starting since 1998 till today when he continues to target the Triple Crown and the Breeder’s Cup Classic as his favourites.

Bob Baffert has listed to his cadre of achievements a grand array of awards ranging from Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer from 1997 to 1999, Big Sport of Turfdom Award 1997 and consecutively for four years won the United States Champion Trainer Award in terms of earnings starting with 1998. Bob Baffert trained racehorses that made a solid mark in some critically acclaimed races like the Haskell Invitational and Santa Anita Handicap.

The trainer is also listed in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame right along with Silverbulletday, a filly he trained that won a major collection of graded stake races ranging from Ashland Stakes to Black Eyed Susan Stakes and is also registered as a United States Champion two and three year old filly for 1998 and 1999.

This year Baffert’s contention on the fields was The Factor who’s been a little off the tracks owning to injuries but is soon expected by fans back to his excellent racing form by year end. Baffert’s army is magnanimous and his work can never be unseen. Maybe that’s why 3D racing games has evolved into such a riot as more and more players desire to develop similar breeding and training techniques as Bob. The games offer the players messaging platforms to share race information and plan strategies with fellow players from around the globe, polish their betting skills and also win real prizes. Well, it can’t get better, can it?

2012 Kentucky Derby Future Odds – May Be the Bet of a Lifetime

Wynn Las Vegas has updated its 2012 Kentucky Derby future odds and, probably not surprisingly, Union Rags is the 10-to-1 favorite. He is followed by Hansen at 18-to-1 and Creative Cause at 20-to-1.

Below is a look at the top contenders, according to Wynn Las Vegas.

Union Rags (Open 60-to-1; Current: 10-to-1)–Suffered a tough head loss when 2nd to Hansen in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The son of Dixie Union won his previous three starts, including the Grade 1 Champagne. He is slated to make his 3-year-old debut in the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park, according to trainer Mike Matz.

Hansen (Open: 250-to-1; Current: 18-to-1)–Capped a perfect 3-for-3 campaign with a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The son of Tapit won the Kentucky Cup Juvenile on polytrack at Turfway Park prior to the Breeders’ Cup. Hansen is proven over the Churchill Downs strip and distance doesn’t figure to be an issue with this one. Speculation is he will make his 3-year-old debut in the one-mile Holy Bull Stakes Jan. 29 at Gulfstream Park for trainer Michael Maker.

Creative Cause (Open: 125-to-1; Current: 20-to-1)–The son of  Giant’s Causeway hit the board in all five starts as a juvenile, including wins in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Grade 1 Norfolk. He was beaten just a length in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in his final start as a 2-year-old. Trainer Michael Harrington is pointing Creative Cause to the Grade 2 San Vicente at Santa Anita on Feb. 19.

Gemologist (Open: 150-to-1; Current: 25-to-1)–Completed a perfect 3-for-3 juvenile campaign with an impressive win at Churchill Downs while making his stakes debut in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Nov. 26. Trainer Todd Pletcher has yet to commit to a next race for the son of Tiznow, but the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park appears to be on the radar.

Secret Circle (Open: 150-to-1; Current: 35-1)–Unbeaten in three starts, Secret Circle followed up his Maiden win with victories in the Jack Goodman Stakes at Santa Anita and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint at  Churchill Downs . He has yet to go a route of ground, but the son of Eddington’s pedigree suggests distance shouldn’t be a problem. Secret Circle is likely to prep for the Derby at trainer Bob Baffert’s Southern California base.

El Padrino (Open: 250-to-1; Current: 35-to-1)–The son of Pulpit has garnered some early buzz following his 3rd-place finish in the Grade 2 Remsen while making his stakes debut at Aqueduct Nov. 26. He has just a Maiden win to his credit, but El Padrino hails from the powerful Todd Pletcher barn and appears one to watch.

Several horse-racing related Web sites offer free handicapping contests throughout the year, many of which include cash prizes and other rewards. Some of the more popular contests can be found at sites such as Equibase.com, Brisnet.com and Publichandicapper.com. In fact, Equibase and Brisnet will be conducting free handicapping contests this weekend with cold cash on the line.

At Brisnet.com, a $1,000 top prize and a seat at next month’s $2-million National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas will be up for grabs in the 13th annual Brisnet.com Handicapping Challenge. There is no entry fee, but participants must be registered BRIS members, which is also free to do.

“This is an excellent opportunity for racing fans to test their handicapping mettle while competing for some of the top prizes available in a free contest,” Brisnet.com Director of Marketing Ed DeRosa said.

Kentucky Derby betting – My Trifecta Bet

On Saturday, the most exciting two minutes of sports will happen! Kentucky Derby 2012 that is, Thank God it’s only a few days away! It seems like we’ve been waiting for ages. For a couple of minutes (it seems like for a couple of days) we will forget about the NFL draft, the NBA playoffs, and the NHL playoffs, as horse racing’s Super Bowl—the Kentucky Derby—takes place. Every year thousands of people go to Churchill to witness this event. And millions watch it on broadcast and do Kentucky derby betting. It’s definitely hard not to get caught up in the history and pageantry of the Kentucky Derby. Especially if you are like me and is planning to bet (who doesn’t want to bet?). And this year, I’m going to make a Trifecta Bet for my Kentucky derby betting. Here’s a look at which of the 21 horses I expect to finish in the Top Three.

Win: Dullahan

Dullahan has a lot going for himself. First, he is coming off a huge win—the Blue Grass Stakes against Hansen, who is an impressive horse in his own right. In that race, he started off fairly slow, but closed on Hansen in the stretch. It was a magnificent victory. Second, Dullahan is good on dirt. In his last dirt start, at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, he had a terrible start but still managed to finish fourth. Last, his half-brother is Mine That Bird, who won the Derby in 2009. It doesn’t get much better than that. As long as Dullahan manages to get off to a decent start—a big if, considering his last few races—he’ll be fine in this one. He is arguably the best finisher in the field.

Place: Union Rags

One of the biggest favorites for this race is coming off a very disappointing race at the Florida Derby. After starting off 2012 with a huge win in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, Union Rags finished a disappointing third in Florida. Nonetheless, don’t overlook this two-year-old as a solid bounce-back candidate. Much like Dullahan, Union Rags is a good finisher. Don’t forget about this popular horse just because of his recent struggles.

Show: Gemologist

Gemologist, a young colt, is unbeaten in his career, and that includes being two-for-two at Churchill Downs. The speedy colt won’t extend his winning streak in this big race, but he will manage to stay with the final pack in the final straightaway. Gemologist is about as safe of a bet as you’ll find, as he is a fantastic starter and has the stamina necessary for the 1 1/4-mile race. I just don’t think he has the finishing speed to take the win. He’ll settle for third.

I am definitely sure that you are reading my article because you are going to do Kentucky Derby betting too. So I hope my article will help you decide on your bet. Good luck!
