While it’s virtually impossible to give you any hard and fast rules in Preakness Stakes betting, or any other horse racing event for that matter, there are a few factors unique to the race that should be taken into account when handicapping the second jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown. For obvious reasons, these alone can’t help you win, and specifically because the field won’t be set up until the week before race day. At any rate, once the field is announced, it is crucial to evaluate all of the contenders with the following concepts to keep in mind:

• Distance

The Preakness Stakes racetrack has a distance of 1 3/16 miles, which means it’s a bit shorter than the Kentucky Derby which is two weeks prior to the race. This means there is no question about the contenders’ ability to handle this distance.

• Schedule

One of the major reasons why winning the Triple Crown is such a rare event it’s because of the grueling schedule of the three races. While the ideal resting period in between races varies from horse to horse, the highest level equine contenders race fewer than ten times annually. And in most cases, Thoroughbreds rarely race without a break of at least three weeks to a month. However, for an aspiring Triple Crown champion, it is necessary to win all three races in just a five week span. In five weeks, there is a two week gap between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, and then there is three weeks between the Preakness and the final Belmont Stakes.

• Weather and Track Condition

Anyone who has witnessed the 2010 Kentucky Derby can say that weather can be crucial in deciding the winner of a race, and horses are known to be very sensitive to the conditions they run in and the surface they run on. To up their chances, most horse owners and trainers try to avoid racing a young horse with much potential in inclement weather or on a sloppy racetrack. So if the weather at a racetrack gets bad, you’ll see a number of “late scratches” because of this. But a Triple Crown race is a different matter, and unless a horse’s connections have reasons to fear for its safety due to the bad elements or track condition, they usually make the start.

• Post Position

In theory, horses that get into the inside position have an edge over those at the outside in any race. However, at the Pimlico racetrack, there is a historically demonstrated bias to horses that run good on the rail. This has produced a number of theories as to why racing near the rail is so valuable in Pimlico—from firmer dirt to an advantage on the tight turns. Whatever the reasons are, it’s something worth paying attention to.

Sloppy Betting on Fast Tracks Leads to Horse Racing Profits

Last week I was very busy and had to rush to the track in order to make post time for the first race.  As I dashed in I saw that the 6 in the first race was at 7-1 and since it was one one of the top three horses in my list of contenders, I raced up to the window and just managed to get a win and place bet down along with an exacta key, top and bottom,  with my other two horses.

When I finally sat down and looked at my past performances, I groaned.  I looked at the 6 again and noticed for the first time that the jockey’s win average was only 4%.  I don’t like to bet on low percentage jockeys.  The starting gate opened before I could cancel my ticket.  I watched as the 6 broke to the lead and led almost to the wire, but was finally beaten by one of the other key horses.  I had a decent exacta and also a nice place payoff.

If I’d had the chance to get to the seller’s window and cancel the ticket, I would have done just that and missed a nice payoff and start to the day.  I had been rushed and sloppy in my preparation and wagering, but it worked out in my favor. Some would argue that it was just my lucky day, but I think there was a lesson to be learned from all this.

In my quest to cover all the bases I had become obsessive about too many things.  In order to get good payoffs on your bets you’re going to have to let your hair down and take a flyer on a horse that is less than perfect.  Sometimes there may be a flaw in the horses stats, connections, running style, but the odds are what really determine whether a runner is worth a bet. 

Every single entrant in a race has a chance to win. If you don’t believe that, get a month’s worth of results and look them over.  You will find that some races are won by the horse with the longest odds and other races are won by longshots that pay big.  Before the race was run, those horses appeared to have no chance.  Only the “Longshot Louies and Louisas,” backed them. 

Obviously, just playing any horse because the odds are long isn’t a good plan, but in the case of my bet, I did have reasons to back the 6.  It didn’t win but I still made a profit on it because of how I played it and because it managed to get into the exacta.  I’m not advising you to throw caution to the wind and to get too wild in your betting, but if the odds are right, you have to make compromises with your rules and guidelines for handicapping horse races and yes, sometimes you have to even get a little sloppy.

Determining Horse Racing Odds

Horse racing is one of the most popular sports in the world, and it is also one of the popular sports that involve betting. For betting fanatics, the odds at a track are typically shown on a tote board, a large board that displays the odds for horse racing. The horse racing odds determine the amount of money one can win based on his bet. For instance, if the odds are 3:1 for a horse competing on the track and you place a bet of $1 on that horse, you can win $3 if that horse wins.

Factor that Determine Horse Racing Odds

The odds for a given horse are determined by a few factors. One is the money that people have wagered on a particular horse. Another is the sum of the money wagered on all horses. Now, a portion of this money goes to the track’s take, which is usually somewhere from 10% to 20%. These factors determine how much you can win when you bet on a particular horse in the game.

Calculation of Odds

For instance, if $1,100 is the sum of all bets and track’s take is 15%, that reduces the sum of money by 15%. So from $1,100, there would only be $935. Supposing the total amount of bets on a horse is $375, this amount shall be subtracted from $935 to give us $560. This resulting amount is divided by $375, and this gives $1.49, which is rounded up to $1.50, resulting in 1.5:1 odds or 3:2.

Constant Changes in the Odds

Horse racing odds for every participant may have predetermined values at the start (in the morning) when no bets are placed yet. Then the values change constantly throughout the day as people place bets on their favored entrants. One can see the odds changing every minute until the race comes to an end. The payouts are not actually based on the odds when you made your wager, but on odds during the end of the betting period.

Dropping Odds

Such betting systems are affected by the number of people casting bets. As mentioned earlier, the amount of bets on an entrant determines the odds. The amount of bets also depends on the number of bettors. In general, as the number of bettors increase, the odds decrease. For instance, there are two horses in a race and ten people are casting bets, each casting a bet of $2. If there are 5 people betting on each horse, that means a total bet of $20 in the betting pool. As one of the horses wins, 5 people will have to divide $20 among them, so they get $4 each. That means for the $2 they bet, they each get $4, giving a 4-2 odds or 2-1. This is a simplistic representation excluding the house cut in the equation.

However, if horse A has 8 bettors and horse B has only two bettors. The odds for horse A drop to 7-5, because 8 people will share the money pool, hence each winning $2.50 for every $2 bet made. The odds drop to 5-4. Consequently, the odds for the horse B climb to 5-1.

The term navicular bone describes a smallish smooth bone shaped like a pyramid sited deep inside a horse’s foot. It fundamentally functions as a pulley over which tendons have smooth play.
