Devil Diver's Shut out from Triple Crown – Excellence as an Older …

Devil Diver may not have been a winner as a three year old, the most important season for any thoroughbred’s racing career but he sure made a remarkable presence in the thoroughbred racing arena with his exemplary performance as an older horse.

He was foaled in the year 1939 and he lived long enough to see to see his progeny perform on the fields though it wasn’t a very impressive work. He sired only 18 stakes winners of which Call Over, Beau Diable and Anchors Aweigh were a few.

Born at the reputed Greetree Stables, Kentucky, Devil Diver came to prominence as an older foal compromising heavily on his races during the two and three year old, one that included tough competitors like Shut Out, Alsab and Whirlaway. As a two year old, he started in as many as 12 races, finishing all in the money, however he won only 4 of them and finished second and third in 7 and a race respectively.  His racing was nonetheless remarkable recognized as he finished second in the Pimlico Futurity and Futurity Stakes winning the Hopeful Stakes, Breeder’s Futurity and the Sanford Stakes.

The sophomore campaign included 9 starts of which the most intense start saw him starting at the Triple Crown Kentucky Derby with stable mate Shut Out. The season was not his best season and Devil Diver finished sixth in the Derby. He pulled off a decent first place finish at the Phoenix Handicap but that was all. It wasn’t until his four year old season that he came in his own and won the Metropolitan Handicap 1943, one which he invariably won in the next two consecutive seasons as well. As a four year old, he also conquered the Brooklyn and Carter Handicap races.

Devil Diver won as many as eighteen stakes towards the completion of his five year old season and was voted the Champion Handicap Horse twice for the years 1943 and 1944. During his three seasons as an older thoroughbred, he earned himself the honour of being the only horse to have won the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap thrice, a record no horse has accomplished.  His true racing form emerged when he won the Whitney and Wilson Stakes, Manhattan Stakes and the Metropolitan. The 1945 season witnessed the older Devil Diver never finish any less than second in his five starts of which he won three.

The impost champion record holder at 134 pounds was ranked at 55 by the Blood-Horse and inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1980. Despite an incredible racing career, little was inherited by his progeny that failed to hit the mark Devil Diver set.

However, being one of the top 100 thoroughbreds from the racing arena, he sure finds a respectable position in the rankings that is the reason why his fans would love to experience his incredibility through http://www.horseracegame.com> 3D racing online games that are now available for both downloading and online gaming.
