Dario Franchitti, a Scottish racing driver of Italian descent has harvested great achievement by winning the Indianapolis 500 for the second time. His ability to elevate team owner Chip Ganassi into a class by himself in motor sports made it all unforgettable.
Dario Franchitti got off to a steady if unspectacular start, through the first 5 races. However, he had the best car of the day. He led more than 150 laps to get 2nd winning in the past four years. This winning contributed to his 23 achievements in American Open-wheel driving, promoting him to the place of top 20 all-time as well as the 18th multiple-win driver in the illustrious history of the Indianapolis 500.
Yesterday when Franchitti sputtered the finish line under the yellow caution flag, he had survived the perils of unstable track conditions on this hot afternoon. Ganassi became the first owner to win the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 and Roger Penske got the two most prestigious prizes in auto racing. Ganassi said that he was lucky to be in that business to cooperate with people who had accomplished that and stated that he was lucky for not encountering serious problems like changing any tires or putting any fuel in the cars.
When Franchitti crossed the finish line, the debris from Conway’s No.24 car was littered behind him. The car had gone airborne, had a collision with the catch fence and come to rest on the blistering asphalt with four tires dislodged.
Franchitti said of Ganassi that they were there to win and wanted nothing except winning. Ganassi’s team won the Daytona 500 with Jamie McMurray at the wheel.
Franchitti became the first Scottish driver to win the Greatest Spectacle in Racing over one time as well as the 17th driver to get two Indianapolis 500 victories. In 2007, he also won the Indianapolis 500 and the BBC Scotland Sports Personality of the Year award. He completed in the American Le Mans Series for Andretti Green Racing with his brother Mario and former IndyCar Series teammate Bryan Herta.
